Zohran Mamdani Wins Nyc Mayoral Election As It Happened
Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, will be the next mayor of New York City. NPR's A Martinez speaks to WNYC'S Brigid Bergin about the race that energized young voters and the challenges he faces. Democrats had a great night last night. They scored major victories in a series of off-year elections in Virginia, California, New Jersey and New York. But can the party maintain this momentum into the midterm elections a year from now? In a few minutes, NPR's Domenico Montanaro will help us answer that question.
We start with the results from New York. New York City voters turned out in record numbers on Tuesday to elect a new mayor. FADEL: Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo, the former governor who was running as an independent candidate. Mamdani will become the city's first Muslim mayor, first Indian mayor and, at 34 years old, the youngest person to lead the city in more than a century. MARTÍNEZ: Member station WNYC's Brigid Bergin joins us now to talk about this historic election. Brigid, I mean, it seemed like there was a lot of excitement around this one.
How many people voted yesterday? Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won New York’s mayoral race, NBC News projects, after the 34-year-old democratic socialist energized progressives in the city and across the country while generating intense backlash from President Donald Trump... In his victory speech after vanquishing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani claimed a broad mandate and set himself up in direct opposition to Trump, who made a late endorsement against him. "In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light," Mamdani said. "Together, we will usher in a generation of change, and if we embrace this brave new course, rather than fleeing from it, we can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears,...
"This is not only how we stop Trump, it's how we stop the next one," Mamdani said. "So Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up." Trump wasn't the only subject of Mamdani's speech, which he started by quoting the 19th- and 20th-century American socialist Eugene Debs and continued by promising the "most ambitious agenda" to address costs in New... The 34-year-old democratic socialist defeated Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing a Democratic primary that he had initially entered as the clear front-runner.
The mayoral race drew the attention of President Trump, who endorsed Cuomo the night before the election and threatened to withhold federal funds to New York City under a Mayor Mamdani. Mamdani's message centered around the cost of living, energizing a coalition of young and progressive voters, even as critics questioned his lack of experience and raised concerns about his stance on Israel. He pledged to freeze rents on rent-stabilized apartments and raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for a host of new services, like free buses and city-run grocery stores. When he assumes office, Mamdani will make history as the city's first Muslim mayor. At 34, he'll also be one of the city's youngest mayors, but not the youngest ever: That distinction belongs to Hugh J. Grant, who was 31 when he was elected to his first term in 1889.
Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election, completing an improbable run from little-known long shot to mayor-elect of America’s largest city. The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani, who was a heavy favorite heading into today, a little after 9:30 p.m. local time. “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” said Mamdani in his victory speech from Brooklyn late tonight.
“I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life, but let tonight be the final time I utter his name, as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and... New York, tonight you have delivered. A mandate for change. A mandate for a new kind of politics. A mandate for a city we can afford. And a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that.
“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he continued. “We will leave mediocrity in our past. No longer will we have to open a history book for proof that Democrats can dare to be great. Our greatness will be anything but abstract. It will be felt by each New Yorker when the city they love finally loves them back.” Mamdani easily defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary earlier this year, and then overcame an independent challenge by the former New York governor, as well as the millions spent by the wealthy to...

“We are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn,” he said. "I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life," Mamdani said. “But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on politics that abandons the many and answers only to the few.” Anthony Izaguirre, Associated Press Anthony Izaguirre, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Zohran Mamdani has won New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, a new vote count confirmed Tuesday, cementing his stunning upset of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and sending him to the general election.
The Associated Press called the race after the results of the city's ranked choice voting tabulation were released and showed Mamdani trouncing Cuomo by 12 percentage points. In a statement, Mamdani said he was humbled by the support he received in the primary and started turning his attention to the general election. "Last Tuesday, Democrats spoke in a clear voice, delivering a mandate for an affordable city, a politics of the future, and a leader unafraid to fight back against rising authoritarianism," he said. "I am humbled by the support of more than 545,000 New Yorkers who voted for our campaign and am excited to expand this coalition even further as we defeat Eric Adams and win a...
