Luke Tress is The Times of Israel's New York correspondent. NEW YORK — An appointee to New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s incoming administration resigned on Thursday after old antisemitic social media posts surfaced earlier in the day. Mamdani named Catherine Almonte Da Costa as his administration’s director of appointments on Wednesday.
The director of appointments is a high-ranking role in the mayor’s office that oversees the recruitment and placement of key staff. On Thursday, a day after Mamdani tapped her for the role, the Anti-Defamation League exposed antisemitic comments Da Costa posted on X in 2011 and 2012. Da Costa wrote, “Money hungry Jews smh,” using an acronym that stands for “shaking my head.” Catherine Almonte Da Costa resigned Thursday from her newly announced role in Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s administration after her past social media posts containing antisemitic language resurfaced, triggering swift backlash. Da Costa had been named just a day earlier as Mamdani’s incoming director of appointments. Her resignation came hours after the Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey publicly questioned whether Mamdani’s team was aware of offensive posts she had made on X, formerly Twitter, more than a...
Those posts, dating back to 2011 and 2012, included explicit antisemitic stereotypes. In one January 2011 tweet, Da Costa wrote, “Money hungry Jews smh.” Later that year, she posted, “Woo! Promoted to the upstairs office today! Working alongside these rich Jewish peeps.” Another post from 2012 read: “Far Rockaway train is the Jew train.” The account remained active until Thursday afternoon, when it was apparently deleted. Before the account went dark, the ADL demanded clarity from Mamdani’s camp, asking whether the posts were known, whether they were excused, and how similar conduct would be addressed in the future.
One day after being hired by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, Catherine Almonte Da Costa submitted her resignation after antisemitic statements in old Twitter posts dating back to 2011 surfaced Thursday. Mamdani transition sources tell NBC New York that he and his transition were unaware of the posts when they appointed Da Costa Wednesday. When Mamdani put Da Costa in charge of hiring for the city, she pledged to recruit diverse talent. "They have to reflect the rich diversity of race faith ethnicity that defines this City," she said at the time. But today, 33-year-old Da Costa was apologizing for antisemitic posts dating back to when she was 18 years old. The posts were first found by the Anti-Defamation League, and then more problematic posts were uncovered by Timmy Facciola in a story on Substack.
Soon after, Da Costa took down her Twitter account. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s appointee Catherine Almonte Da Costa resigned just a day after she was tapped as director of appointments. New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s pick for a crucial City Hall position resigned on Thursday, shortly after her history of antisemitic posts on X came to light. Mamdani had announced his appointment of Catherine Almonte Da Costa as director of appointments, responsible for staffing City Hall, on Wednesday. But on Thursday, several posts on X where she peddled age-old antisemitic stereotypes were published by the Judge Street Journal, a Substack about New York City politics. “Money hungry Jews smh,” Da Costa posted on a now-deleted account on X in January 2011, when she 19 years old.
In another post from June 2012, she wrote, “Far Rockaway train is the Jew train,” appearing to reference the large Jewish communities off the line.
