The Washington Autism Alliance & Advocacy is on a mission to ensure that all children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD’s) & other developmental disabilities(DD’s) have every opportunity to thrive and become productive... We do this by helping families access ASD & DD health insurance benefits, effective services in schools, and supportive community-based services, regardless of their personal financial situation. WAAA started in 2007 with only four members who had children with autism and wanted to fight for their right to autism health benefits.
Three years and 800 members later, we successfully achieved health care coverage for all of them through Washington state insurance. We also had several other wins for individuals covered by private insurers. Our efforts have helped more than 12,000 Washington residents secure autism coverage to pay for vital therapies that would otherwise cost a family $25,000 to $50,000 per year. Today we provide health law advocacy to an average of 2,500 member families a year, in every ZIP code in Washington. We continue to lobby for social change and legislation on behalf of children and adults with autism. We are also expanding our education support, which is available now only on a limited and all-volunteer basis, into full education advocacy program that can effect measurable change in a child’s experience and success...
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, WAAA has been able to accomplish so much in the past year. We empowered 2,455 families through counseling, trainings and resources to secure treatment funding through private insurance and to secure effective services in public schools throughout the state. We made headway with the Office of Insurance Commissioner to issue regualtions on how insurance companies should cover autism spectrum disorders. We advocated for better training and a career path for para-educators as well as 1.256 million dollars in funding developmental and autism screening for toddlers suspected of having autism. Founded over five decades ago, Wonderland Child & Family Services (Wonderland) is a nonprofit agency that offers a range of services to help children with developmental delays, disabilities, and prenatal substance exposure. Wonderland’s mission is to provide a strong and equitable foundation for children and their families with diverse needs and abilities to flourish through therapy, education, advocacy, and resources.
In 2019, in recognition of a rapidly growing need of services for children and families coping with prenatal substance exposure (PSE), Wonderland launched Hope RISING Clinic. Located in Bothell, Washington, this pioneering clinic exclusively supports children up to age 13 who have been impacted by prenatal substance exposure, all through a trauma-informed and neurobehavioral lens. Services include occupational therapy, mental health and caregiver counseling, feeding support, sensory processing support, educational advocacy, caregiver education, social skills coaching, and linkages to community resources. Thank you for making this work possible! Individuals with Disabilities, Youth & Children Washington Gives, the year-round giving platform that hosts the GiveBIG and GivingTuesday campaigns, is a program of 501 Commons.

Wonderland is proud to offer autism navigation services as part of our Early Support program.
Autism navigators offer pre- and post-diagnosis support to help families understand their child’s ASD (autism spectrum disorder) evaluation and possible diagnosis. This personalized, short-term service pairs families with an experienced navigator, who will provide resources and information, answer questions, and help locate services. “I’m realizing an autism diagnosis is a shared experience among parents but a different expression for each child.” “I actually feel good about the diagnosis and clear on everything. This was a much better process than when we went through it the first time [before Wonderland], and I’m very grateful for the support!” Wonderland autism navigators work in collaboration with the University of Washington’s On-Time Autism Intervention team, providing guidance, education, and support surrounding the diagnosis.
With so much information available on the internet, autism navigators help families navigate common myths and misperceptions about autism and better understand their child’s diagnosis.
