The White House is receiving backlash from multiple leading First Amendment and journalism organizations after creating a searchable webpage targeting journalists for coverage seen as unfavorable to the administration.
The webpage, published on Nov. 28, features a “Hall of Shame” and a “media offender of the week,” followed by a searchable list of reporters’ names and their headlines that the administration takes issue with. Accusations of misconduct are attached to each story, with perceived offenses like “left-wing lunacy,” “omission of context” and simply “lie.” The page also includes a tip submission form to “help expose the worst of the worst,” with the page asking users to submit any outlet that may be “misrepresenting the Trump Administration and skewing... The webpage was immediately decried by press groups and First Amendment advocates for its targeting of reporting critical of Trump administration activities.
