What Will Pats Do At No 4 And What Should They Do Experts Weigh In Msn
NFL Draft expert Todd McShay joins “Zolak & Bertrand” to share his thoughts on what he thinks the Patriots will do with the fourth overall pick. If Mike Vrabel wants to realize his goal for the New England Patriots of winning the AFC East in the near future, he needs to have a successful 2025 NFL Draft. And that all starts with the No. 4 overall pick. While the Patriots seemingly hit a home run with the No. 3 pick in last year's draft -- quarterback Drake Maye -- they may have a harder time next Thursday night.
The consensus is that there are only two true "blue-chip" prospects in the 2025 class -- Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter -- and there's a very real... Gasper, Christopher Price, Dan Shaughnessy, Tara Sullivan, Ben Volin, and Nicole Yang | April 24th, 2025, 2:41 AM We asked the Globe’s football cognoscenti to weigh in on what the Patriots should do and predict what they will do when they are on the clock with the No. 4 pick in Thursday night’s NFL Draft.
What the Patriots should do: Pounce if the Giants do something stupid. It appears as though the Giants will do the obvious and take Penn State edge-rushing maniac Abdul Carter at No. 3, presuming Cam Ward and Travis Hunter go 1-2. But there’s a small plume of smoke around the possibility that New York will draft overrated Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, leaving Carter — the best defensive prospect in the draft — for the Patriots. Come on, Joe Schoen. Do the wrong thing.
What they will do: Draft LSU tackle Will Campbell. This is the most likely scenario. It’s also the most boring scenario, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Campbell’s floor is as a very good NFL lineman. The question is whether he can remain a left tackle — perhaps you have heard a word or two about his arm length? — or ends up at guard.
Ideally, the Patriots could trade down a few spots and still land him, but he’d be a solid pick at 4 in a draft thin on blue-chip talent. What the Patriots should do: If Patriot prayers are answered and Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter is still on the board when they pick at No. 4, you rush the selection card to commissioner Roger Goodell like Saquon Barkley. If that’s not the case, the Patriots should pass on short-armed left tackle Will Campbell of LSU at No. 4 and trade down to accumulate draft capital. This is still a roster with too many holes to risk using a top-five pick on a player who can’t fill a major one long term, and the depth in this draft is in...
Depending on how far they trade down in the first round, the Patriots should target someone from this group of prospects: Georgia edge Jalon Walker, Campbell, Penn State tight end Tyler Warren, or Alabama... This draft demands hitting on more than just the first-round pick. The New England Patriots have their next coach, but a long to-do list awaits Mike Vrabel and the front office. Even if there are higher priorities at the moment — like filling out Vrabel’s coaching staff — the NFL Draft remains the most important aspect of the offseason for a rebuilding team. And that brings us back to the sting of missing out on the No. 1 pick.
After upsetting the Buffalo Bills in Week 18 behind rookie Joe Milton III, the Patriots will pick fourth in Round 1. For now, though, let’s offer an early (and optimistic!) look at what awaits the Patriots in April. It’s still very early in this process — we’re more than a month away from the combine and three months from the draft — but here’s what would likely lead to the best-case scenario... Since the Pats already have a talented young quarterback in Drake Maye, they would benefit from the consensus top two quarterbacks (Cam Ward of Miami and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado) performing well in the... That would open a wide range of options for the Patriots at No. 4.
In the above scenario, at least one of cornerback/receiver Travis Hunter (Colorado) or edge rusher Abdul Carter (Penn State) would be available at pick No. 4. They’re widely viewed as the draft’s two most talented players. Who do the experts think the New England Patriots will take in the 2025 NFL Draft? With over two months to go until draft day, experts have settled upon a handful of names. The most common pick you’ll see in mock drafts is LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, who’s the top player at a position of need.
However, there are some other picks floating around. Some mocks have New England pouncing all over Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter if he falls to them. In other cases, the Patriots are projected to see what they can get out of two-way star Travis Hunter. Then there’s Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham, who’s a dark horse to be one of this year’s top picks. One name who hasn’t been popping up as much is Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. This year’s top wideout was a common pick early on, but appears to have lost some steam.

Curran, Perry debate originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston Unlike last spring, when the New England Patriots desperately needed a quarterback, there are conflicting views on how the organization should use its top-five draft pick. New England owns the fourth overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Left tackle remains a glaring position of need, and LSU’s Will Campbell should be there for the taking when the Patriots are on the clock, but flashier options such as wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter,... So, should the rebuilding Patriots prioritize protecting young quarterback Drake Maye, or should they target another playmaker at No. 4?
Tom E. Curran and Phil Perry discussed the question on the latest episode of the Patriots Talk Podcast. “You have two prospects who are really, when you think about it, at opposite ends of the spectrum,” Curran said of Campbell and Hunter. “You have a guy (Campbell) who you watched play 2,600 snaps in the best league in college football, played at an extremely high level against players who are already in the NFL and making... You know what he can do at left tackle. Regardless, he’s not gonna walk in and be an absolute abject disaster at left tackle.
He could be Matt Light. … The Pats are in a rare spot, sitting pretty with the 4th pick in the upcoming draft. Their 2024 season was a tough pill to swallow, especially on defense where they barely mustered any pressure on opposing QBs. Now, they've got a chance to snag a game-changer who could turn things around in Foxborough. With only 28 sacks last year, dead last in the NFL, it's clear the Patriots need some serious help getting after the quarterback.
That kind of toothless pass rush just won't cut it in today's pass-happy league. No wonder Bill Belichick's successor is itching to make a splash with this high draft pick. Two schools of thought are emerging in Foxborough. Do they shore up the offensive line to protect young QB Drake Maye, or add a game-wrecking pass rusher to revitalize their defense? On the O-line front, LSU's Will Campbell stands out. The 6'6", 325-pound tackle has the size and skill to be a day one starter.
But some scouts whisper he might be a reach at 4. The defensive side offers more intriguing options. Penn State's Abdul Carter has scouts drooling. The edge rusher racked up 13 sacks and 22 tackles for loss in 2024. His explosive first step and bend around the edge are reminiscent of a young Von Miller.
