Panelists include Sharon Landesman Ramey, Julie Washington, and Todd R. Risley, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Alaska and co-author of the critically-acclaimed book, Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children. In this 60 minute webcast, the panelists will discuss the importance of working with young children, as early as possible, to develop language and pre-reading skills. They will also offer research-based strategies for successfully developing these skills, so children can become better readers. Delia Pompa: Hello, I’m Delia Pompa. Welcome to this year’s second teleconference in the Reading Rockets series — Achieving Success in Reading. Today we’re going to look at how what happens before children enter school affects their ability to learn to read. Here to help us are three of the nation’s leading experts in early childhood education.

Dr. Todd Risley is the co-author of the seminal research study “Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children.” He is professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Alaska. The 13 self-paced modules encompass research, impact, and critical elements of assessing, preventing, and overcoming reading difficulties.The modules are connected to David Kilpatrick's book (shown above) but the book is not needed to view... The nine self-paced modules cover everything from print-awareness to phonological awareness to vocabulary. They can be taken online anytime and help teachers prepare for the CERI test. The Foundational Skills Mini-Course dives into the content of literacy foundational skills, with an emphasis on phonological awareness, phonics, and how these connect to early reading.

Instructional guidelines and concrete recommendations for teacher practice are also explored. CORE offers webinars on several topics related to structured literacy and struggling readers. Sample webinars include “Structured Literacy for English Language Learners” and “Strategies for Success: Helping All Students Become Strong Readers.” This IDA branch offers free webinars on a variety of topics related to language, literacy, and special education. Sample webinar topics include spelling, reading comprehension, handwriting, and assistive technology. The primary mission of Reading Rockets is to provide resources to help parents and educators support struggling readers.
