The WEST–E Agriculture Education test (037) will be retiring and replaced by the National Evaluation Series™ Agriculture test (320). The last administration of this test will be December 28, 2025. 2025–2026 score report dates for the Washington Educator Skills Tests are now available. For National Evaluation Series™ tests for which practice tests are available at the time of registration, the practice test will be provided automatically during registration at no additional cost. Guaranteed. The WEST comes in two forms. West-B (for Basic) tests for competency in reading, writing and math. Passing it is a requirement for anyone hoping to be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate level teacher education program. Candidates are still required to take a basic skills assessment for admission to a preparation program and for teacher certification. Candidates do not need to achieve a specific passing score for state certification. The WEST–B is a basic skills assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics. The basic skills assessment can now be used as one of multiple measures that gauge a candidate's skills upon entry. Programs may set additional basic skills requirements and procedures for their admission requirements. The sections below describe how to use the test summary and framework to understand both the design and content of a WEST–E test. Read the test summary to familiarize yourself with the structure of the test. The test summary outlines the following components for each test: All Washington educators must meet a variety of assessment requirements throughout their journey to becoming certified. The Legislature mandates these requirements and PESB sets policy to establish them, permitting educators to work in Washington schools. To earn a residency teacher certificate, candidates must take a basic skills assessment and a content knowledge assessment.

Each program is allocated a certain number of test vouchers for candidates covering full or partial fees for registration and preparation resources for the WEST-B, WEST-E, NES, and edTPA. Programs have the option to purchase additional vouchers. The basic skills test ensures that teacher candidates have basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills before entering a preparation program. Candidates have many options to meet the basic skills requirement, including the Washington Educator Skills Test – Basic (WEST-B), SAT, ACT, and several other equivalent assessments. In 2019, the Legislature removed the requirement for candidates to meet a minimum passing score. Preparation programs use the test results as a formative assessment of academic strengths and weaknesses to determine a candidate’s readiness for the program.
