General Manager Adam Peters didn’t have as many picks at his disposal as the 2024 season, which saw him add some key players that supported the NFC Championship run this past season. Earlier in the offseason, Peters made some key additions to the roster, helping to address needs on both offense and defense. Even though the Commanders had ideas and discussions of possibly trading back to strengthen their areas of concern further, Peters chose to remain in their respective draft slots. Offensive Tackle Josh Conerly Jr. (Oregon) – Some Commanders’ fans scratched their heads after this pick. But they have to remember who their GM is. Peters told the media how highly he and the organization thought of Conerly Jr., who was one of their top prospects on the draft board. Conerly Jr. spent three years in Oregon and became a full-time starter from the 2023 season to 2024.

He was named to the Third-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-Big Ten. He’s an athletic tackle who provides good vision moving in between the lines from block to block. He excels at finishing his run blocks and in passing protection, allowing only two sacks from his sophomore to junior year. This is a great addition to the revamped Washington o-line, adding a great young talent playing opposite of star Laremy Tunsil, who can help solidify the protection of one of, if not your most... The Washington Commanders were busy once again this offseason, as general manager Adam Peters worked to retool the roster with trades and veteran free agent signings. Now, it's time to continue building for the future with the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Commanders will begin the three-day even with five picks, including the No. 29 selection. Some of their picks have been moved to acquire talent like Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel from the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers, respectively. Because of those moves, the Commanders do not currently own a third-round pick, although that could change by the end of the night. The Washington Commanders wrapped up a five-man 2025 NFL draft class on Saturday that earned plenty of praise across the league. While Washington was short on picks due to trades for the veterans, the Commanders made the most of every pick. Washington went into the draft with multiple needs, including edge rusher, offensive line help, cornerback and more weapons for quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders addressed most of those needs in Adam Peters' second draft as Washington's general manager. Here are six takeaways from the Commanders' 2025 NFL draft. For the second straight year, no team had a higher Relative Athletic Score (RAS) than the Commanders.

Not only is character important to Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, but athleticism is also critical. Every player that Washington has picked over the last two years ranks among the highest at their respective positions in RAS. All five 2025 draft picks finished with an RAS of 8.29 or above, with four going over 9.0. Most of Washington's picks fall under the elite category in the explosion, speed and agility sections. The Commanders needed to add speed and they did again with their 2025 class. Yes, the Commanders needed more picks.

Because, after all, the more chances you get, the odds are more in your favor of hitting on your picks. So, if you have 10 picks, the statistical odds are better that you'll find starting-caliber players than if you have just five picks. However, Peters had opportunities to trade out of the No. 29 and No. 61 positions but stayed put, selecting offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. and cornerback Trey Amos, respectively.

Washington knew that teams interested in trading up late in the first round were interested in Conerly. The Commanders had a first-round grade on Amos, so instead of trading back for more picks, Peters stuck to his board and drafted the best player. A tackle with length and movement skills in Round 1: A two-year starter for the Oregon Ducks at left tackle, Josh Conerly Jr. allowed just two sacks over the past two years. He graded above the 75th percentile in all facets, including a 78.1 true pass set PFF pass-blocking grade in 2024. Conerly shows good athleticism for the position, displaying quick and explosive feet. He doesn’t need to immediately start after the Commanders traded for Laremy Tunsil this offseason, but he could slide into guard and be very effective. A scheme-versatile cornerback with the ideal blend of size and skill: Trey Amos brings good speed and strong movement skills to the Commanders’ defense.

He earned an 85.6 PFF coverage grade in 2024, forcing 13 incompletions and recording three interceptions. A standout at the Senior Bowl, Amos showcases good instincts in zone coverage and has the size and athleticism to lock down opposing receivers in man coverage. The Washington Commanders entered the 2025 NFL Draft with transformation in mind. As Adam Peters steers the front office and Dan Quinn establishes a renewed culture of toughness and precision, Washington sought to plug key roster holes while continuing their ambitious roster makeover. Without a third-round pick, the Commanders had to maximize value with every selection. Their approach showed a smart balance of long-term thinking and short-term impact.

It set up a critical season for a team with rising expectations. Heading into the draft, Washington's most urgent need was clear. They had to replace Dante Fowler Jr. He led the team in 2024 with 10.5 sacks but left in free agency. The lack of a true edge presence put pressure on finding a pass-rushing solution. The secondary, while bolstered by the acquisition of Marshon Lattimore, still needed depth and developmental talent at cornerback and safety.

On the offensive side, uncertainty loomed large over the wide receiver room. Four top contributors—including Terry McLaurin and newly acquired Deebo Samuel—are on expiring contracts. Reinforcements were needed to ensure franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels had weapons beyond 2025. Offensive line depth was also on the radar after investing heavily in Daniels' protection during free agency. As such, drafting Josh Conerly Jr was a forward-thinking move. Conerly's stock steadily rose throughout the college season thanks to his elite athleticism, smooth footwork, and increasingly polished technique. Sure, Washington already boasts veteran tackles in Laremy Tunsil and Brandon Coleman. However, Conerly brings insurance, competition, and a possible heir apparent to a crucial position. Critics might argue that passing on immediate defensive help was a risk. Still, you can't fault the Commanders for investing in the long-term security of their franchise QB.

With the growing volatility of offensive line play across the NFL, having three starting-caliber tackles is a luxury most teams would envy. The Commanders struck gold late in the second round with Trey Amos. He is a physical, aggressive man-to-man corner. Amos perfectly complements Marshon Lattimore's style. He has the instincts to thrive in Quinn’s defense, which leans heavily on press coverage and tight windows. Amos isn't just a plug-and-play option.

He could also emerge as a full-time starter by midseason. His ball skills, competitiveness, and resilience against big-bodied receivers address a critical need in the secondary. Peters prioritized getting a young, ascending talent in Amos without overreaching. This one could pay immediate dividends. The Washington Commanders 2025 draft was short on quantity but high on potential. With just five selections this year, Washington focused on finding immediate contributors and long-term pieces across critical positions.
