Vlex contains detailed case law information, including district and circuit court judgments from the last 100 years.
Current case law information is regularly updated, and published and unpublished opinions are updated within a day. Cases are segmented to identify majority opinions, dissenting opinions, concurrences, and non-normative parts, and judges, parties, counsel, docket numbers, disposition, key passages, and supported propositions are all tagged to aid in efficient legal research. vLex contains the complete U.S. Federal and State Codes and Regulations and is regularly updated to provide complete tracking of legislative changes, including future versions, executive orders, and effective dates. Rutgers has access to the U.S. Academic Core collection on the vLex platform.

We will mainly focus on resources for researching federal law and Washington State law. Some resources for researching the law in other states and countries are mentioned as well. Remember to evaluate every source that you consult to determine whether it is current, accurate, and authoritative. This is particularly important when relying on free and low-cost resources. Fastcase is a low-cost legal research database. It was recently acquired by vLex.

You can search for case law in a variety of ways on vLex. One option is to enter your search terms into the simple search bar and use the Case law filter to focus your results on that type of content. Alternatively, you could start from Browse and filter by Case law, or use the Content option on the Advanced search page. From Browse, click Case law. You can then select whether to filter cases By category, By court or By report (where available). At this stage, you can filter your search further, or you can choose to View all.
Filters in Browse vary depending on your jurisdiction.
