Trump S Speech On Economy Laist
Why now: Trump spoke as his approval rating on the economy has hit a new low of 36%, according to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll. The poll found that the cost of living in particular is weighing on Americans. Anything new?: The president announced one new policy, saying that nearly 1.5 million military service members will be receiving a "special warrior dividend" of $1,776, a reference to the nation's founding in 1776. Trump said the money will arrive "before Christmas" and that "the checks are already on the way." President Trump opened a primetime address to the nation on Wednesday with a message intended to reassure Americans. "Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I am fixing it," he said at the start of his speech.
However, in his roughly 20-minute address from the Diplomatic Reception Room, Trump broke little new ground, restating messages his White House has been pushing for months: that current economic problems can still be blamed... WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump needed only eight seconds to start lying in his prime-time address Wednesday night, shouting through a fairly typical unhinged rally speech, except relatively brief and to a prime-time audience... “I inherited a mess years ago, and I’m fixing it. When I took office, inflation was the worst in 48 years, and some would say in the history of our country,” Trump said in the first of numerous falsehoods throughout the address that his... In fact, inflation was down to about 3% when Trump took office 11 months ago and was trending downward still. That trend reversed in May, after Trump declared his trade war against the rest of the world and imposed taxes on most imports ― what has become the largest tax increase on Americans in...
The only new announcement in the 18-minute address was that he was issuing $1,776 checks to 1.5 million military service members ― a bonus that will cost $2.5 billion. Trump claimed the money would come from tariffs collected from imported goods. “We made a lot more money than anybody thought because of tariffs,” he said, but failed to point out that every dollar collected in tariffs comes from American importers. For the first time in months, President Donald Trump held a campaign-style rally, traveling to a Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, casino to talk about the economy amid growing consumer concerns about affordability that Trump has... In his roughly 100-minute speech, he talked about his love of the word "tariff" and zeroed in on the "fake news" reporters covering the event. At times, supporters chanted "four more years," although experts have told PolitiFact another Trump candidacy would violate the 22nd Amendment’s clear intent. Trump’s Dec. 9 comments touched on other high-profile recent topics. As Minnesota is in the news for a fraud scandal involving Somalis, he attacked Rep.
Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who is Somali, saying she "does nothing but bitch. She's always complaining." The crowd responded, "Send her back." Omar is a U.S. citizen, as are the majority of Somalis in Minnesota. And amid his recent focus on former President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen, Trump mused about whether Federal Reserve Board members appointed by his predecessor were serving illegally. There’s no way to nullify presidential actions signed by autopens, legal experts say. This article is part of The D.C.

On Wednesday evening, the world was treated to President Donald Trump’s Christmas letter, delivered in a disjointed rant from the White House. It was a self-graded check-in, coming nearly one year into office as the public is increasingly skeptical about what they signed up for when they gave Trump the keys to the White House for... And unlike his position when the year started, Trump now seems to have lost control over his Republican Party, as more lawmakers are starting to realize the prices they might pay for their continued...
It was, as departing Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene observed on Tuesday, a sign that “the dam is breaking.” Even so, it sure felt like Trump was taking a self-congratulatory victory lap even as those watching were wondering when he... Trump’s message, delivered in just under 20 minutes from the White House’s Diplomatic Reception Room, would have fit in naturally at a campaign-style rally. But those events are not always carried live by the major networks and treated as primetime must-watch events. So Americans and those around the globe watched as Trump unleashed his favorite set of grievances about Democrats, migration, border policies, transgender rights, wokeness, self-dealing, the environment, the economy—basically every issue or piece of... WASHINGTON − President Donald Trump delivered a forceful defense of his first 11 months in office during a primetime address from the White House, pointing the finger at Democrats for Americans' economic anxieties in...
"Boy, are we making progress," Trump said Dec. 17 in a speech focused heavily on affordability, which has increasingly bedeviled his administration and threatens his party's electoral chances next year. Trump blamed the problem on his White House predecessor and immigrants without legal status as polls shows Americans increasingly losing confidence in his economic stewardship. The president's brief address − it clocked in at under 20 minutes − often looked backward as he mentioned former President Joe Biden seven times. Trump said that he “inherited a mess,” and that under the Biden administration, life became “unaffordable for millions and millions of Americans." "This happened during a Democrat administration, and it's when we first began hearing the word affordability," Trump said in comments from the White House Diplomatic Room, which was adorned with Christmas decorations.
In a campaign-style rally in Pennsylvania on Dec. 9, President Donald Trump honed a message of “lower prices, bigger paychecks” ahead of next year’s midterm elections. Some of his talking points on the economy missed the mark. Trump said during his remarks in Pennsylvania that his administration “inherited the highest prices ever and we’re bringing them down. We inherited the worst inflation in the history of our country.” He later claimed that “inflation is stopped.” He has made similar claims many times before — but they’re still false.
Trump did not inherit “the worst inflation” in American history. The worst inflation occurred after World War I, when the largest 12-month price increase was 23.7% from June 1919 to June 1920. Also, from March 1979 to March 1980, overall inflation rose 14.8%. Inflation had climbed substantially during the first half of former President Joe Biden’s term, mainly due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, as we’ve written before. For the 12-month period ending in June 2022, the Consumer Price Index increased 9.1%. That was “the largest 12-month increase since the period ending November 1981,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

Updated on: December 18, 2025 / 12:41 AM EST / CBS News The "warrior dividends" that Mr. Trump announced Wednesday — essentially $1,776 end-of-year bonuses — are being sent to members of the active-duty military with a grade of O-6 or below, the White House said on X. In the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force, that includes people with the officer rank of colonel or below, and in the Navy and Coast Guard, it covers people with the rank of captain... It's not clear if there are limits on enlisted personnel. Members of the military's reserve components will also get checks if they were on active-duty orders of 31 days or more as of Nov.
30. About 1.28 million members of the military's active component and 174,000 reservists will get the supplement, a senior administration official said. The total cost of the one-time payments will be about $2.6 billion.
