travis hunter update emerges after jaguars trade decision

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost their transcendent two-way player for the remainder of the season after Travis Hunter underwent knee surgery. That end, however, was just the beginning of questions regarding what's next for the two-way player. Sources say Jacksonville does, in fact, plan to continue to deploy Hunter as their top wide receiver and matchup cornerback moving forward. In fact, prior to Hunter's non-contact injury during practice on Oct. 30, he was ramping up to be used more, not less. Hunter shined on both sides of the ball during a Week 7 game in London against the Rams on Oct.

19. The 22-year-old did well when covering star receiver Davante Adams, while also notching career highs in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (101) while also scoring his first career touchdown. Hunter's role of taking on a specific defensive assignment -- red-zone scenarios, track one WR, etc. -- was going to increase and, based on the way he was getting open, his targets as a top receiver along with Brian Thomas Jr. were slated to rise, as well. JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

-- The Jacksonville Jaguars will not see Travis Hunter back on the field until 2026, after the franchise announced his season-ending knee surgery on Tuesday. With the loss of Hunter for the rest of the season, the Jaguars and their decision-makers are now faced with several key questions. Which three are the most looming? We break it down below. With only seven games of a sample size for Hunter on each side of the ball, there clearly isn't a lot of clarity about his best usage and ideal role. All we have on both sides of the ball are flashes.

On offense, we have seen Hunter's explosive skill set after the catch and ball skills downfield. Defensively, we have seen his ability to make plays on the ball and thrive in both man and zone coverages. But those flashes don't do much in terms of mapping out his future, let alone his 2026 season. How the Jaguars plan to move forward with his development will shape their entire offseason, determining just how much help they need at both wide receiver and cornerback. Whether the Jaguars move forward with the idea of Hunter starting on both sides of the ball after an injury -- when he did not even do that as a rookie -- seems like... The Jaguars have quite a few questions facing the wide receiver room, and Hunter's injury only makes the picture fuzzier.

Hunter looked prime to get a larger role on offense, but we will now go into 2026 without knowing if that is a role he can truly undertake. Aside from that, Hunter's injury changes how the Jaguars could have evaluated their current room for next season. The Jaguars may shed the two-way role for Travis Hunter. Jaguars coach Liam Coen opened the door for Hunter to exclusively serve as a cornerback or receiver after an inconsistent rookie season that ended early due to season-ending surgery on his right knee. Hunter underwent surgery Tuesday to repair an isolated lateral collateral ligament, and the team said he should return to “full football activities” within six months. “I understand there’s a lot of questions about if he’ll remain a two-way player and all those kind of things,” Coen said Wednesday.

“All of that is very premature, and at the end of the day like every player on this roster he’ll be evaluated at the end of the season and we’ll be able to give... It’s notable that Coen did not outright state that Hunter will continue to serve in both capacities since the Jaguars traded up in the 2025 NFL Draft to land the former Colorado star for... JACKSONVILLE – Earlier today, Jaguars WR/DB Travis Hunter underwent successful surgery to repair an isolated lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury in his right knee, the team announced. Beyond the LCL, there was no additional damage to the knee, which Hunter injured during practice on Oct. 30. The procedure was performed by Dr. Dan Cooper and Jaguars team physician, Dr. Kevin Kaplan, in Dallas.

(AP Photo/Kin Cheung) JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter had season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee and is expected to return to the football field within six months. The team said there was no additional damage to Hunter’s knee, which he injured during a non-contact drill in practice last month. Hunter was coming off a career performance in London before his injury. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner caught eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams, and the Jaguars (5-4) were planning to use him as their No.

1 receiver moving forward partly because Brian Thomas Jr. leads the league with nine dropped passes. Jacksonville Jaguars' rookie Travis Hunter will miss the remainder of the 2025 season. The team announced on Tuesday that Hunter had successful right knee surgery on an LCL injury. Hunter will be able to return to full football activities within six months. He suffered the non-contact knee injury in practice coming out of the bye week.

Hunter will finish his rookie season having caught 28-of-43 passes for 298 yards with a touchdown on offense.
