For context, Brady announced his retirement twice in the past years, once in 2022 and then in 2023. Now, he’ll be returning to the field, but not in the NFL. On September 15, it was announced that Brady is returning to the football field at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic. Hosted by Saudi Arabia, it will take place on March 21, 2026. The tournament is a part of Riyadh’s Season program, arranged by Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. In a press release, Tom Brady expressed his enthusiasm for coming out of retirement and participating in the flag tournament.

He said, “I couldn’t be more excited to return to the field, get the competitive juices flowing alongside some of the game’s brightest stars and iconic legends, and bring a truly unique global sports... Reportedly, the biggest names in football are likely to grace the event, which includes CeeDee Lamb, Maxx Crosby, Rob Gronkowski, and many others. Brady further added, “I have always admired the power of flag football and how it connects fans of all ages, and it’s awesome to be able to showcase the sport on such a global... (via New York Post) Tom Brady had earlier announced his retirement in 2022, but was back in the sport 40 days later. In the following year, he again took to X (formerly Twitter) to share that he’s retiring from the NFL for “good” this time.

He had stated, “Good morning, guys. I’ll get to the point right away. I’m retiring. For good, I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning, I figured I’d just press record, and I’d let you guys know first. It won’t be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year.”

And now, surprise surprise, the GOAT is coming back; though not in the way you might think. Nope, he’s not rejoining the NFL, but he is stepping onto the field for a major global event. Honestly? We should’ve known Brady wasn’t built for the sidelines.

Let’s rewind for a sec. Brady first retired in 2022, giving fans a teary farewell after more than two decades of dominance. That lasted, what, about a month? By March, he was already announcing he’d be sticking with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played one more season before hanging it up again in early 2023, this time swearing it was the real retirement. But here we are.

It seems like Brady just can’t resist the adrenaline of competition. Only this time, he’s not returning to the NFL grind. Instead, he’s trading the 100-yard field for a flag football showdown halfway across the world. According to People, Brady is officially locked in for the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, happening March 21, 2026, at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. And FOX Sports says the event will feature “three teams of incredible current and legendary professional football players and world-class athletes” competing in a “round-robin tournament.” So what makes it different?

The format is Olympic-style flag football. Think smaller field (50 yards), shorter halves (20 minutes each), and a fast-paced 5-on-5 setup, People notes. It’s basically football without the bone-crunching tackles; but with plenty of star power. If anyone can understand what Philip Rivers is doing, it's Tom Brady. "I think the answer for me would be yes. I'm not allowed to anymore because I'm a minority owner of the Raiders, so I can't unretire." Brady had to underline the impossible nature of his situation -- with partial ownership negating the option to return -- otherwise he might be inundated with questions about why he doesn't take the field... There is little doubt from a mental or competitive argument that Brady could probably still sling it well. The G.O.A.T. retired in 2023, at the age of 45, after putting up his sixth consecutive season of 4,000-plus yards passing (4,694) -- only Dak Prescott is on pace to surpass that figure this season (4,756).

He led the NFL in completions and attempts in back-to-back years before officially retiring. The real question is, after so much time off, would he be able to take repeated hits? Tom Brady, widely regarded as the greatest player in NFL history, said that at 48 he still feels fully capable of returning to the field, but stressed that doing so is impossible given his... “I think the answer would be yes, I’m ready and I could come back, but I’m no longer allowed to because I’m a minority owner of the Raiders, so I can’t come out of...
