We look at the latest in the case against Tyler Robinson, the young man authorities believe is responsible for the assassination of conservative youth leader Charlie Kirk last week in Utah. Prosecutors in Utah yesterday said they intend to file murder charges against the 22-year-old man who they believe assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, is being held in a county jail. For more on this ongoing story, we're joined by NPR's Bobby Allyn in Salt Lake City. Good morning, Bobby. RASCOE: So what's the latest in the case against the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson?

ALLYN: Well, Utah County prosecutors said they intend to file aggravated murder charges against him on Tuesday, when he is also set to make his first court appearance. The charges carry the possible punishment of the death penalty if convicted. And most of what we know about the case so far is outlined in an affidavit that was filed after Robinson's arrest. And it says Robinson discussed with his family that Charlie Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University and that he really disliked Kirk, telling them that Kirk was, quote, "full of hate and spreading... RASCOE: Now, this shooting happened at a public amphitheater with thousands in attendance. What security breakdowns may have allowed this to happen?

Prosecutors in Utah have formally charged Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder. That's in the shooting death of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk. They will pursue the death penalty. They also revealed new information about Robinson's roommate and communications between the two immediately after the shooting. CHANG: OK, so tell us more about what prosecutors were saying today as they announced these charges. HARRIS: Yeah, so they announced that they're filing six felony charges and one misdemeanor against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, including aggravated murder. Here's Utah County attorney Jeff Gray. JEFF GRAY: Following the press conference, I am filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. I do not take this decision lightly, and it is a decision I have made independently. HARRIS: Other felony charges include discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Updated September 16, 2025 at 17:49 PM ET Tyler Robinson, the man accused of fatally shooting conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, was charged with aggravated murder and other counts, in a case in which prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. "The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy," said Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray at a news conference on Tuesday. "Charlie Kirk was murdered while engaging in one of our most sacred and cherished American rights." Authorities have also charged Robinson with firearm counts and multiple obstruction-of-justice charges for allegedly disposing of clothes he wore during the shooting. He is accused of directing his roommate to delete incriminating messages and not speak with investigators after Kirk was killed.

Investigators say surveillance footage showed Robinson walking with a peculiar gait they believe indicates Robinson had a rifle hidden in his pants. The weapon, a bolt-action rifle, is thought to have been a gift from his grandfather. Prosecutors say Robinson wrapped the gun in a towel and placed it in a wooded area after the shooting. This morning, President Trump went on "Fox & Friends" and announced an arrest had been made in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Investigators in Utah identified a 22-year-old man, Tyler Robinson, and they say they believe he acted alone in killing Kirk. The arrest follows a two-day manhunt in Utah, where Kirk was killed while speaking at a public event in the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem.

For the latest on the case, we are joined by NPR's Bobby Allyn, one of our team who is in Orem. Hi, Bobby. KELLY: Tell me a bit more about what we know about this suspect. ALLYN: Yeah. He doesn't have a criminal history. Public records show that he doesn't seem to be affiliated with any political party.

He was a really bright student in high school. He even earned a scholarship to attend Utah State University - that's just north of here, in Logan - but he dropped out after one semester. The university says that was back in 2021. More recently, Mary Louise, Robinson's family noted that he's become more politically active, which is a really crucial point, since authorities are calling Charlie Kirk's killing a political assassination. ALLYN: Well, last night, Utah Governor Spencer Cox and FBI director Kash Patel released new video footage of Robinson jumping off a campus roof after Kirk was shot, and officials pleaded with the public... And soon after, authorities say a family member of Robinson's reached out to law enforcement.

Robinson apparently confessed to shooting Kirk to this family member. Prosecutors have filed a notice to seek the death penalty for Robinson. Tyler Robinson, who is accused of assassinating conservative influencer Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, has been formally charged with a slew of offenses, including aggravated murder, with prosecutors announcing the intent to seek the death penalty. Gray, who described Kirk's death as "an American tragedy," said he does not "take this decision lightly" in regard to seeking the death penalty for Robinson.

The suspected shooter will continue to be held without bail. Robinson made his first appearance in court virtually on Tuesday, where a judge read off the suspect’s charges. He will remain in custody. Utah prosecutors have booked the suspect accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk on an aggravated murder charge. Tyler Robinson was also arrested on charges of obstruction of justice and the felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, authorities said. The 22-year-old Utah resident has been detained in a county jail since he turned himself over to police in connection with the assassination of the conservative influencer Wednesday during an outdoor appearance at Utah...
