Following an impressive rookie campaign with the Washington Commanders, the young QB continues to receive praise from his peers. After being taken with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft, the Commanders wasted no time putting Daniels in a starting role.
This proved to be a smart decision, as he quickly altered the trajectory of the franchise. Along with throwing for over 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns, Daniels led Washington all the way to the NFC Championship game. Coming off such a strong first year in the NFL, the hype around Daniels has quickly skyrocketed. Among the most recent people to give him his flowers is a star-level talent within his own division. During his appearance, he was posed with the question of naming his top five quarterbacks in the NFL right now. After kicking off their first OTA of the offseason, one thing is clear: Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is not the same player he was a year ago. Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury says Daniels is beginning to settle in now that he's in his second year at the helm. Kingsbury pointed to Daniels' growing confidence and speed on the field as signs he's turning the corner. "Just watching him move around, he's not thinking as much; he's playing fast and letting his natural gifts kind of take over — and that's what we want to see," Kingsbury said. "So, I expect him to take a big jump."
With Year 1 behind them, the chemistry between Kingsbury and Daniels is growing. Like any new relationship, the first season was about getting to know each other. Now, they're in sync — with Daniels playing faster, thinking less, and executing more naturally. Daniels showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie year, but this offseason, Kingsbury sees a more relaxed and instinctive quarterback. With a full season of experience and an offseason to build chemistry with teammates and coaches, Daniels looks ready to take the next step. Jayden Daniels had an undeniably breakout rookie campaign in the NFL, leading his Washington Commanders to become one of the season’s standout teams.
Challenges often arise during the sophomore year for Offensive Rookies of the Year, but the former LSU star says he’s ready. The numbers posted in their second year by recent OROY winners have often dipped significantly compared to their debut season — a trend Daniels is determined not to be a part of. In a recent conversation with the media, one of the most impactful quarterbacks in recent times made it clear how he plans to navigate this next phase successfully, subtly warning his rivals that they’ll... “I’m sitting down and watching film and trying to eliminate some tendencies, as much as possible,” Jayden Daniels told Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “Talking to the coaching staff on areas that they feel like I need to improve on and having conversations so we can all hit at full speed.” Jayden Daniels #5 of the Washington Commanders looks to throw the ball during the third quarter against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Divisional Playoff at Ford Field on January 18, 2025 in Detroit,...
The Washington Commanders selected Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick of the NFL Draft late last month, hoping to end their woes at quarterback. Wide receiver Jahan Dotson in particular is very excited to have Daniels in tow, saying he wanted the LSU standout all along. “He’s great,” Dotson said, via Grant Gordon of NFL.com. “I don’t know if I can say this, but that’s the quarterback that I wanted. But yeah, I was happy when we drafted him, I’m really looking forward to building a relationship with him, furthering our relationship, as I’ve known him in the past, but he’s been good so... He’s only been here a couple days now, but he has big things coming for him.”
Since entering the NFL as a second-round draft pick of the Commanders in 2022, Dotson has already been through three starting signal-callers. He is hoping the fourth time is the charm. The Washington Commanders were a good Cinderella story for most people heading into the NFL playoffs. After years, even decades, of mediocrity, Washington’s future looks set thanks to an electric offense courtesy of rookie sensation Jayden Daniels. However, the Commanders opened some eyes over the weekend, dispatching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a poised, mature showing for the young squad. But it wasn’t their offense or a surprisingly adequate defense on the night that had fans gushing about the team.
Instead, it was a relatively inconspicuous moment towards the end of the encounter that caught everyone’s attention. A Chase McLaughlin field goal tied the game for the Buccaneers at 20 apiece. However, it also set up a clock-draining, four-minute and 41-second drive for the Commanders. Washington drained out the clock to set up a game-winning field goal from 37 yards out with just two seconds left on the clock. Zane Gonzalez doinked it in off the right upright, and Washington had won its first playoff game in 19 years. However, as the euphoria in the Commanders’ sideline or on the field around Gonzalez descended, a stoic Daniels was channeling his inner “Job’s not finished” Kobe Bryant or, as some termed it, Tom Brady.
