takeaways from seahawks week 9 trouncing of commanders

Pouring on 31 first-half points behind a flawless Sam Darnold, the Seattle Seahawks cruised to a 38-14 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Northwest Stadium. The Seahawks (6-2) won their 10th straight road game, and are now 11-1 away from Lumen Field in the Mike Macdonald era. Washington (3-6) took a massive blow with the loss of Jayden Daniels late in the game. Here’s what we learned from a blowout Seahawks victory over the Commanders in Week 9. Sure, the Commanders were without their top wide receiver and had multiple other injuries that kept them from being full strength.

But Daniels was in the game until suffering a gruesome arm injury midway through the fourth quarter (it was already 38-7) and Washington put forth their best effort until the end. This is the best offense the Seahawks have had since at least 2020, and the defense is far better than that unit six seasons ago. That’s allowing Seattle to play complementary football, and their two losses have been by a combined seven points (those teams are also a combined 12-5). The Seahawks made a statement on Sunday night. Seattle won 38-14 over the Commanders, with Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold throwing four touchdowns without an incompletion in the first half. It was a dominant performance that was made worse for Washington when quarterback Jayden Daniels left with his left arm in an aircast in the fourth quarter.

This was very impressive. We were long past wondering if Darnold’s 2024 success with Minnesota was a fluke, and Seattle already looked so smart for moving on from Geno Smith and giving Darnold a $100 million contract. Darnold has never looked better than he did in the first half Sunday night – 16-for-16, 282 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, just a dominant showing on the road against a solid opponent. If you needed an infomercial on how well offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s unit took advantage of Darnold’s strengths and moved the ball so consistently with ease, this was the half to watch. Darnold came into the night with stats very close to his breakout 2024 season: his TD/INT ratio last year was 35-to-12, this year was 12-to-4 before Sunday, now even better at 16-to-5. He’s done that in an offense that traded away DK Metcalf and didn’t have wide receiver Cooper Kupp on Sunday, in part because fellow WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been an All-Pro receiver and a...

1. The Seattle Seahawks took it to the Washington Commanders on Sunday night, jumping ahead 28-0 in what would eventually be a 38-14 victory. The Commanders started the game on offense, picked up a first down, but were then pushed back when center Tyler Biadasz was called for an illegal blindside block. Washington eventually punted. On Seattle's first possession, defensive back Marshon Lattimore was called for pass interference. It didn't matter.

The Commanders couldn't stop the Seahawks, whether they interfered or not. Then, down 7-0, Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels saw left guard Chris Paul get flagged for a facemask penalty. Daniels was eventually intercepted. That was only how it started. It got much worse for the Commanders. They failed in all three phases, including rookie wide receiver Jaylin Lane fumbling a kickoff deep in Washington territory.

It never improved. The Commanders' defense was so bad that Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold was 16 of 16 for 282 yards and four touchdowns at halftime. Of course, things would get worse, as Daniels would suffer a gruesome elbow injury late in the fourth quarter. His season could be over, ending what has been a frustrating second season for the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Here are five takeaways from Washington's latest loss. Watch the top plays from Seattle's Week 9 win over the Washington Commanders.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold throws a 17-yard pass to wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba during Sunday's matchup against the Washington Commanders. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold finds wide receiver Tory Horton in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown during the Week 9 matchup with the Washington Commanders. Seattle Seahawks safety Ty Okada goes diagonal to intercept Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels in Week 9. The Seattle Seahawks dominated from start to finish in a 38-14 win over the Washington Commanders, who lost star quarterback Jayden Daniels to a serious left arm injury late in the game on "Sunday... Here are four takeaways from Sunday's NFL nightcap:

Darnold could not have started any better in Sunday's win, going a perfect 16-of-16 for 282 yards, four TDs and a 158.3 passer rating in the first half. Two of those strikes were to rookie Tory Horton, who had four catches for 48 yards and two TDs. Jaxon Smith-Njigba put up eight receptions for 129 yards, giving him at least 100 receiving yards for the sixth time this season. This game was already in the books before Chris Rodriguez Jr.

carried it up the gut for a score, but not even a crazy comeback would revive this crowd, with Jayden Daniels now in the locker room with a seemingly serious arm injury. The Commanders quarterback, who'd just returned from a hamstring issue, required a large arm brace before exiting. Oh man: Washington's star signal-caller was driving the Commanders into the red zone (albeit down 31 points with fewer than eight minutes to play) and had his left arm trapped as he went to... Replay wasn't pretty. Medical trainers escorted Daniels off the field with his elbow immobilized. The Seahawks used their 6-foot-6 tight end to take the direct snap under center and plow in for six:

Who says the Seahawks' quarterback can't make acrobatic plays, too? Daniels escaped a slew of Seahawks defenders on his way to an improbable would-be first-down scramble, but then Williams' last-second dive tripped up the Commanders' slippery quarterback, preventing Washington from adding points after Sam...
