Strategic Research Clusters Faculty Of Engineering Hku
The Faculty’s research landscape is diversified and inclusive, with three defined Interdisciplinary Strategic Research Clusters: Environment, Health, and Data. On basis of the solid foundation with individual domain expertise and the established collaboration network, the Faculty endeavors to expand the strategic collaboration in academia and with industry at both institutional and individual levels... Not only does this research cluster align with the University’s Strategically Oriented Research Themes (SORTs) on the areas of “Smart Systems & Sustainable Society (S4) and “Future Innovative Technologies (FIT), it is also in... The cluster has earned a solid international reputation in water environmental engineering, with emphasis on water resource planning, system integration and life-cycle analysis, water and wastewater treatment as well as wastewater-based epidemiology and environmental... Remarkable achievements have also been made by researchers in sustainable energy engineering, especially wireless power transfer, smart grid and electric vehicles as well as energy storage and conversion. Researchers in this cluster have active and fruitful research collaborations with local and overseas universities.
In particular, they have successfully obtained and led five theme-based research scheme projects to investigate frontier technologies for developing a sustainable environment, namely: Many human health challenges can be tackled by innovative engineering solutions. Our faculty members have been leading research and development in biomedical engineering, data and health, technologies and health, and environmental studies of health etc. We aim to accelerate scientific discovery and empower new generation of diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and to develop technologies for human health and infection control. Highlighted areas: The Faculty is committed to producing research of world-leading quality which has outstanding impact.
Our goal is to maximize our impact through recognizing our core attributes in research and pooling talents. Concerted efforts have been made by the Faculty to advance research and spearhead innovation across disciplines which includes strengthening international exposure and pursuing international scholarly recognition, fostering a more open and supportive research culture,... The Research Student Centre (RSC) in the Faculty is a vehicle to foster the innovation and entrepreneurship activities in an unconventionally way. Traditionally, research postgraduate students are placed in the laboratories or offices separately in different departments.
The separation of location is a detrimental effect in the promotion of interdisciplinary collaboration of research. With the establishment of the RSC, over 140 students from the 5 departments are housed in the same facility. Inside the RSC, students from different departments are mixed in their seating based on their research interestes in line with the Faculty’s interdisciplinary research clusters, and no physical barrier will separate them. This will establish an ideal environment that promotes the exchange of ideas. The RSC aims to change the traditional culture, and promote excellence in exploration (identify emerging research problems), evaluation (derive cross-disciplinary solutions) and entrepreneurship (develop, compete and launch business). The RSC will collaborate with other organizations and departments inside or outside HKU to organize a series of student-centred learning activities in three aspects, i.e.
academic, personal and professional developments, to help RPG students acquire an enjoyable research experience, lifelong research partners and mentors, valuable professional skills and networks, a sense of proudness and spirit in a unique community,... The RSC is located at the Ground Floor of Haking Wong Building with an area close to 750 square meters, which can house over 140 RPG students. With a high head room, a mezzanine floor was constructed. The RSC will facilitate group exchanges in 5 discussion rooms yet retain a quiet environment for individual students. The RSC is equipped with pantries and air-conditioning systems. To enhance the connectivity between ground floor and mezzanine floor, the RSC includes an interior spiral staircase between ground floor and mezzanine floor.

HKU is a comprehensive research-intensive institution engaging in innovative research with local, regional and global significance. Our research policy is formulated to strengthen capabilities in both fundamental and outcome-driven research and knowledge exchange within a culture that enables our researchers to flourish and innovate. The University’s research strategies and policies are managed by the University Research Committee (URC), a committee of the Senate chaired by the Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).
