Source Marcus Mariota Commanders Agree To 1 Year 8m Deal
The Washington Commanders and Marcus Mariota agreed to terms on a one-year, $8 million deal, according to team and league sources. Mariota spent the 2024 season with the Commanders and was No. 111 overall and the seventh-ranked quarterback on The Athletic’s updated top 150 free-agents list. In his one season with Washington as the backup to Jayden Daniels, Mariota passed for 364 yards and four touchdowns in three regular-season games, adding another 92 yards and a touchdown rushing. He notably led the Commanders to wins in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers after Daniels exited with an injury in the first quarter, as well as Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys, playing... Last season was the 10th of the 31-year-old quarterback’s NFL career.
Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner, was selected with the No. 2 pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 draft. He made 61 of his 74 career starts during his five seasons with the Titans from 2015 to 2019. His most recent starting role was with Atlanta in 2022, when he started the first 13 games of the season for the Falcons, passing for 2,219 yards and 15 touchdowns to nine interceptions and... Mariota also spent two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders (2020 and 2021) and another with the Philadelphia Eagles (2023) in a backup role before joining the Commanders last offseason. The Washington Commanders, who are widely expected to select a quarterback with the second overall pick in next month's draft, agreed to a deal with veteran Marcus Mariota, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter...
Mariota, who played sparingly for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, agreed to a one-year deal worth $6 million that could reach $10 million with incentives, sources told ESPN. The Commanders also have Sam Howell, who started every game last season, and are likely to select between quarterbacks Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels in next month's draft. It's the latest move for Washington during the early part of free agency. The Commanders have added multiple starters during this time, including deals with veteran running back Austin Ekeler and veteran tight end Zach Ertz. Washington's backup quarterback in 2023, Jacoby Brissett, agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots on Monday, but the Commanders were not strong suitors for him. Mariota's arrival provides options for Washington.
The Commanders could draft a quarterback and keep three on the roster. They could see if Howell could be a future No. 2 for them, or they could decide to trade him if the team receives a good offer. According to Tom Pelissero, the Commanders are re-signing QB Marcus Mariota to a one-year, $8 million deal on Wednesday. Last week, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald named Mariota one of the top options for HC Mike McDaniel’s system in Miami. However, Mariota has elected to return to Washington.
Mariota, 31, is a former No. 2 overall pick of the Titans back in 2015. He signed a four-year, $24.214 million rookie contract that was fully guaranteed. The Titans picked up Mariota’s fifth-year option worth $20.922 million for the 2019 season. They declined to re-sign him as an unrestricted free agent after he lost the starting job, though, and he ultimately agreed to a two-year contract with the Raiders worth $17.6 million. After playing out his deal in Las Vegas, Mariota signed a two-year deal with the Falcons in 2022.
Atlanta opted to release him and he signed a one-year deal with the Eagles worth $5 million. It has been reported by multiple sources that Marcus Mariota is set to return to the Washington Commanders on a one-year, $8 million deal. The 31-year-old quarterback, entering his 11th NFL season, played a key role in mentoring rookie Jayden Daniels throughout the 2024 season, stepping in to lead the team to two victories when Daniels was injured. Mariota’s standout moments included a 205-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Titans and a game-winning drive to defeat the Cowboys. A former Heisman Trophy winner, Mariota’s career has seen him play for the Titans, Raiders, Falcons, and Eagles. With 93 career games, 16,184 passing yards, and 18 rushing touchdowns, he brings invaluable experience and depth to Washington’s quarterback room.
