Skywatch Wednesday is a YouTube video series with the Adler Planetarium’s Theaters Manager Nick, who uses cutting edge visualizations, NASA images, and astrophotography to show you what you can see in the night sky... Episodes are released on select Wednesdays, and highlight celestial objects like planets or constellations you’ll be able to spot on your own at home. Sometimes you may need a telescope or binoculars, but often you can see objects with the naked eye. Viewers will also learn how to see comets, eclipses, conjunctions, and other celestial phenomena depending on what’s up in the night sky! Signal (our space comedy show), and always include a wholesome meme or two! Each Skywatch Wednesday is unique. Our goal is to cover topics relevant to the week of the episode airing so that you can go out and explore the night sky after watching. Sometimes we’ll talk about constellations and asterisms that are especially easy to see during a given time period, a planet that is making a close approach to Earth, an especially stunning phase of the... We’ll also cover timely topics, like how to view comet c/2022 (ZTF) or the “planet parade.” The Adler’s view of downtown Chicago is magnificent, but the lights of the city make it a little tough to see the ones in the sky.

Our live presenters will turn down the city lights and crank up the stars to show you the night sky over Chicago like you’ve never seen it before. You’ll learn how to navigate by starlight, get to know the stars behind your favorite constellations, and witness the incomprehensible vastness of the universe without ever leaving your seat. Our view of the real sky shifts each day as Earth makes its way around the Sun, and so does the model sky in Skywatch Live! We interviewed Nick back in November 2020 about the series, and in March 2021 the name of the series was changed to Skywatch Wednesday. Hi, Nick! Can you give us a brief introduction?

How long have you been working at the Adler? I am the Manager of Theater Experience & Presentation, so I make sure our public-facing dome presentations are engaging and inspiring. That includes writing shows, creating visuals, hiring and training our presenters, and a whole lot more. I started at Adler in 2004 as a part-time Show Operator when I was still at Northwestern getting a degree in Theater. I also have training in Astronomy, so the world of live planetarium presentation really combines two of my passions. With the museum’s doors closed to help curtail the spread of COVID-19, how did that affect your day-to-day job?
