The MLB Most Valuable Player Awards for the 2025 season are official, and while one league had a tight race, it wasn’t close in the other. After winning his second World Series in as many years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani also has back-to-back NL MVP Awards under his belt after a unanimous vote from the Baseball Writers'... The two-way Japanese superstar was named the 2025 NL MVP, giving him four over his MLB career. He won his first two in the American League with the Los Angeles Angels. In fact, he has won an MVP Award in each of the last three seasons, having won the 2023 award in his final year as an Angels star.

Ohtani won the MVP for the third straight year, his second in the NL with the Los Angeles Dodgers after two in the AL with the Los Angeles Angels. All four have been unanimous.

Judge became the Yankees' fourth three-time winner, edging Seattle’s Cal Raleigh with 17 first-place votes to 13 for the switch-hitting catcher. The vote was the closest for an MVP since the Angels’ Mike Trout topped Houston’s Alex Bregman by 17-13 in 2019. Ohtani became just the second player to win at least four MVP awards, trailing only seven by Barry Bonds. The 31-year-old Ohtani is the first to win in each league twice after getting the AL honor in 2021 and 2023. He signed with the crosstown Dodgers the following offseason and won NL MVP in 2024 during his first season in Chavez Ravine. He’s also won the World Series in both his seasons with the Dodgers.

They are the giants of the sport. Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge are the two best players in baseball. It was confirmed Thursday night with the announcement that each one is their league’s Most Valuable Player. It was the same story last year. And for the past five years they have been the best in the game. Poor Bobby Witt Jr.

and Cal Raleigh. Last year, Witt had one of the greatest seasons ever by a shortstop. He finished a distant second in MVP voting to Judge, who grabbed all 30 first-place votes. Raleigh had the greatest season ever by a catcher—a switch hitter who hit 60 home runs and drove in 125 runs (leading the league in both) while catching more innings than anybody else in... And yet, he, too, finished second to Judge, though he did grab 13 first-place votes. Judge is just that good, an unprecedented batting champion with 53 home runs.

So is Ohtani, who won his fourth MVP, all of them unanimously. Nobody else has more than one unanimous MVP. They are the two biggest reasons why baseball is enjoying a renaissance of interest—and two of a kind unlike anything we’ve seen before. Judge and Ohtani have won seven of the past 10 MVP Awards. In those seven award-winning seasons they received 195 of 210 first-place votes (93%). Shohei Ohtani doesn't have anyone but Barry Bonds to chase.

Ohtani won his fourth Most Valuable Player award Nov. 13 when balloting from the Baseball Writers’ Assn. was announced. It is his second National League honor with the Los Angeles Dodgers after winning a pair of American League MVPs down the freeway with the Angels – the first player to win multiple MVPs...
