A seminar is a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to participate.
This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue[1] with a seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can be conducted.[2] The word seminar was borrowed from German[3][4] (in which it is capitalized as Seminar), and is ultimately derived from the Latin word seminarium, meaning 'seed plot'[5] (an old-fashioned term for 'seedbed').[6] Its root word... In some European universities, a seminar may be a large lecture course, especially when conducted by a renowned thinker (regardless of the size of the audience or the scope of student participation in discussion). Some non-English speaking countries in Europe use the word seminar (e.g. German Seminar, Slovenian seminar, Polish seminarium) to refer to a university class that includes a term paper or project, as opposed to a lecture class (e.g.
German Vorlesung, Slovenian predavanje, Polish wykład). This does not correspond to the English use of the term. In some academic institutions, typically in scientific fields, the term "preceptorial" is used interchangeably with "seminar".[7][8] In North Indian universities, the term "seminar" refers to a course of intense study relating to the student's major. Seminars typically have significantly fewer students per professor than normal courses, and are generally more specific in topic of study. Seminars can revolve around term papers, exams, presentations, and several other assignments.
Seminars are almost always required for university graduation. Normally, participants must not be beginners in the field under discussion at US and Canadian universities. Seminar classes are generally reserved for upper-class students, although at UK and Australian universities seminars are often used for all years. The idea behind the seminar system is to familiarize students more extensively with the methodology of their chosen subject and also to allow them to interact with examples of the practical problems that always... "Seminar room" is often used as a name for a generic group study or work space at a library.[9] Some seminar rooms are more tailored to a specific topic or field, literally a space... All Honors College students are REQUIRED to take at least one Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar (IHS) within your first six semesters; with special permission, you may extend this requirement to the first semester of your...
The seminars enable students to explore emergent fields and specialties while developing a breadth of foundational knowledge at the start of their academic careers at Rutgers. Rather than deferring advanced concepts and questions to upper-level courses, Interdisciplinary Honors Seminars initiate sophisticated scholarly discussions in our students’ first years, eliciting the genuine curiosity that makes them eager to learn more. Usually limited to 18 students, these seminars broaden students’ perspectives and place knowledge in context, providing Honors students with the opportunity to find their intellectual passions—to discover the ideas that capture their imagination, focus... Seminars are also discussion-centered using the Socratic method to examine and explore the various ideas and topics from multiple perspectives. Engaging in an enriching discussion is one of the most useful and important skills in academia and in the world beyond. Students often find the experience so rewarding that they regularly take more than one seminar.
Our graduates have shared that the Honors Interdisciplinary Seminars are "the most stimulating learning environment" that they have had at Rutgers. A seminar is an educational event where people come together to learn about a topic. During these events, speakers (who lead the event) encourage participants to join discussions. They ask questions, conduct group activities, and come up with fun games. These activities make the learning experience more enjoyable, memorable, as well as easier to understand. The purpose of this is to make learning engaging and interactive.
It allows participants to gain a deeper understanding of the topic while also expanding their network. Speakers can introduce themselves to a wide audience, gaining support and recognition. As for students, they have the opportunity to meet others who share similar interests. Read down below to learn more about what a seminar is! Seminars and lectures have similarities that can make them confusing. Both are formal events that aim to teach people about specific topics.
Similarly, both are also led by people knowledgeable in the topic. Even though they have the same foundations, both educational events still have differences that set them apart. Both events can have 15 attendees or more, but the main difference is in the focus. Simply put, if you want to learn more about a topic and have the chance to interact with the facilitator, you should choose a seminar. On the other hand, if you are new to something and prefer to learn by listening only, a lecture would be a better choice. To sum it all up, their differences serve different purposes and can fit your preferences and needs.
