Roman Anthony Signs Long Term Deal Poised To Become Red Sox Msn
About 90 minutes before the first pitch of the game between the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night, rookie sensation Roman Anthony sat in a custom-made suit at a... He was there, along with team CEO Sam Kennedy and chief baseball office Craig Breslow, to announce his new eight-year, $130 million contract, that will keep him “The Hub” until he is about thirty... At just 21 years of age, Roman Anthony has become a centimillionaire. Not bad work for a guy who just two months ago was in Triple-A and who has played only 47 career games. With the signing, Boston’s “Roman Empire” has officially begun. But the long-term deal should not come as a surprise to Red Sox Nation or baseball fans outside of New England.
Anthony entered the season as Keith Law’s No. 1 prospect, and is slashing .276/.392/.417 after getting off to a slow start (through his first 10 games, he was hitting .097, with just three hits and one home run; that, despite hitting at... Since then, all he has done is slash .318/.430/.462, with 42 hits in 37 games. He has been an anchor in the Red Sox lineup, where manager Alex Cora now has him hitting leadoff. The extension is also in keeping with what the club has done as of late. Last season they signed 26-year-old pitcher Brayan Bello to a six-year, $55 million contract after just two big league seasons.
The next month they locked up future Gold Glove centerfielder (when he is not playing above-average second base) Ceddanne Rafaela with an eight-year, $50 million deal. This was signed after he played in just 28 games. After Boston made a big off-season splash to acquire Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, they doubled down nearly immediately, giving him a six-year, $160 million extension. According to The MLB.com, that is the largest contract ever given to a pitcher with just four years of service time. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa) The Boston Red Sox and breakout rookie outfielder Roman Anthony are in agreement on an eight-year, $130 million contract extension that includes a club option for the final year of the contract, according to... Anthony will now be under team control through the 2034 season. Anthony's new deal will begin in earnest in the 2026 season.
There are significant escalators in the deal that could take the maximum value of the contract to $230 million. The 21-year-old Anthony, who was one of the top prospects in all of baseball, was called up earlier this season and has become an integral part of Boston's summer resurgence as one of the... In 46 games for the Red Sox, Anthony is slashing .283/.400/.428 with an .828 OPS. He has hit two home runs to go along with 19 RBI in his first season with Boston. BOSTON — Roman Anthony has done nothing but impress since making his Red Sox debut in mid-June. Now, the club is making a sizable commitment to ensure the outfielder is a part of its core for years to come.
A source confirmed Wednesday that Boston has agreed to a long-term extension with Anthony that begins in 2026, guarantees $130 million over a minimum of eight seasons and could reach $230 million with escalators,... The deal includes a $30 million club option for 2034 and either buys out three or four of Anthony’s free agent seasons, depending on where he finishes in this year’s Rookie of the Year... The 2034 campaign will be Anthony’s age-31 season. Boston’s 2034 option would bring the value of the deal to $160 million over seven years. His salaries in 2031, 2032 and 2033 could escalate based on how he finishes in the Rookie of the Year race this year and future MVP races (as well as, in a smaller way,... The $230 maximum figure is virtually unattainable because it would require Anthony to win the AL MVP award each year for the foreseeable future.
You can read a full breakdown of the deal’s details here. The Red Sox announced the contract at a press conference with Anthony shortly before Wednesday’s game against the Royals. Anthony’s deal marks the second time in recent months the Red Sox have made a play to lock up a top prospect in his first big-league go-around. In the first week of the regular season, Boston committed an eight-year, $60 million guarantee to Kristian Campbell. Anthony’s deal, which comes just 46 games into his big league career, comes with a far greater guarantee (as well as earning potential). The Boston Red Sox continue to lock up their young talent as Roman Anthony has agreed to an eight-year, $130 million contract extension per Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Anthony, the former number one prospect in baseball, has been a key contributor for the Red Sox since his promotion back in early June, hitting .283/.400/.428 in 46 games. One of the best young talents in the game, Anthony is now locked in with Boston through at least the 2034 season. The contract also includes a club option and will begin in the 2026 season. While the deal is originally worth $130 million, it includes significant escalators that could nearly double the original value of the contract for Anthony up to $230 million. With this contract, the Red Sox will buy out either three or four years of Anthony’s free agency, depending on where he finishes in the AL Rookie of the Year race. Should Anthony finish in the top two, the Red Sox may have won massively with this contract, as it would buy out four years of free agency instead of three.
Anthony has been a leader on the field since being called up in June and has been a key component of the Red Sox turnaround on the season. Since his promotion, the Red Sox have won 32 games and helped increase their record to 64-51, good for the top Wild Card spot and second in the AL East. There is no denying his impact and the Red Sox were wise to lock him up quickly. The 21-year-old outfielder, who has 159 major league at-bats so far, is signed through 2033, with a team option for 2034. The deal was announced with the Red Sox on a seven-game winning streak heading into Wednesday night's game against the Kansas City Royals.
Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz is hosting his 17th annual celebrity golf tournament down in Florida this weekend. The goal is to raise nearly $2 million for charity. MLB.com’s Ian Browne caught up with Ortiz on Friday, and the Hall of Famer had some special praise for Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony. “He brought too much to the table for being 21. He has the talent, it’s unquestionable. Plus he has the maturity,” Ortiz told Browne.
Anthony, who finished third in the AL Rookie of the Year race despite playing just 71 games this season, is already an incredibly polished hitter for his age. He’s poised both on and off the field, as nothing seems to faze him. David Ortiz on Roman Anthony."He brought too much to the table for being 21. He has the talent, it's unquestionable. Plus he has the maturity. The Red Sox aren't famous on giving big deals to young players that early.
I think it was a wonderful move to sign him right away so he… Roman Anthony signed an eight-year, $130 contract extension with the Red Sox, a deal that has an option year that could add another $30 million of value. On the surface, it's a tremendous amount of money for a 21year old to guarantee himself. On the other hand, though, there's no doubt that Anthony could have earned a lot more money if he waited things out and either signed a more lucrative contract with the Red Sox or... Based on the way Anthony deflected questions about extension talks in spring training and during the regular season, it might have looked like the top prospect was heading down that path. Yet on Tuesday, he explained what changed and made him want to put pen to paper.
"Just wanting to be here and knowing what I know now, and with two months of experience under my belt, and living in Boston, and being in the city, and the way that these... "It's a special place, and it was a pretty simple decision for me. I wanted to be here." Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy admitted that it has "hurt" in the past when the team has failed to sign homegrown players to long-term deals, and he credited chief baseball officer Craig...
