The Center for Clinical Studies provides Washington University researchers with administrative and clinical research services from the initial proposal phase through study close-out. Saint Louis University has earned the highly revered “R1” designation in the 2025 Research Activity Designations published on Feb. 13 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, affirming SLU’s place among preeminent research universities in the United States. R1 designation is the highest classification that universities can attain for research activity. With this distinction, SLU joins an elite group of 187 universities nationwide. SLU researchers are developing new treatments for chronic ailments, advancing vaccines for infectious diseases, and pioneering better approaches for pain management.

At Washington University School of Medicine, more than 1,000 clinical studies begin every year to evaluate new investigational therapies or devices. For every clinical study, also called a clinical trial, investigators need volunteers to serve as research participants. By taking part in clinical studies, volunteers may gain access to the latest in medical care that is only available through this process. Volunteer for Health Volunteer for Health is a program sponsored by Washington University School of Medicine to support patient-oriented research at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and throughout Washington University Medical Center. The first step to becoming a study volunteer is to become a member of the Volunteer for Health Research Participant Registry. The Registry gives individuals the opportunity to participate in clinical studies and play a vital role in improving health care. The treatment of acute and chronic illnesses improves every year because of advancing science and research. People who are healthy and those who have medical conditions are needed, from every ethnic and age group.
