reports emerge of major patriots draft trade and it s not the no 3 pic

After months of constant speculation and rumors, the NFL Draft is finally here. New England is at the beginning stages of their rebuild and this draft gives them the perfect opportunity to bring in some players who can change things around. There have been rumors that the Pats are taking phone calls on the No. 3 pick but it seems more likely that they stand pat and select their new franchise quarterback. With Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels likely going 1-2, Drake Maye could be their guy. But reports have emerged that New England won't be done after that selection, and is looking to move back into the first round.

ESPN's Mike Reiss has reported that the Patriots have discussed what it would cost to jump back into the back half of the first round. With needs at WR and OT, it makes sense why they could look to move back into the first. New England owns the No.

34 overall pick, which is a valuable asset and which shouldn't take too much more ammunition to move back up into the tail end of the first Multiple teams have reportedly made phone calls to the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants inquiring about potential trade-up scenarios for the No. 2 and No. 3 picks in the 2025 NFL draft. ESPN's Peter Schrager reported the news on Tuesday. Most would likely assume the interest would be in Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, but according to Schrager, teams are calling for Penn State's Abdul Carter, Colorado's Travis Hunter and Boise State's Ashton Jeanty.

"There have been phone calls made to both the Browns at [No.] 2 and the Giants at [No.] 3 with the intention to move up with several different sources telling me there are teams... The timing for the sudden trade talk feels about right with the draft slated to kick off on Thursday night. However, if teams are suddenly interested in the top-three picks, one has to wonder if interest could grow at No. 4 as well, depending on what player is left on the board. Would a team consider trading up with the Patriots to get one of those top-tier players? The 2025 NFL Draft isn’t set in stone just yet.

A new report from ESPN indicates that we could see some trades in the top three, which could change things up for the New England Patriots. According to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants have received calls about their top-three draft picks. Schrager notes that "neither team is outwardly rejecting those overtures." The report adds some intrigue to an NFL Draft picture that appeared to crystallize in recent weeks. The Tennessee Titans are expected to take Miami quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1.

Meanwhile, most mock drafts have the Browns taking CB/WR Travis Hunter at No. 2. At that point, the Giants are often projected to take pass rusher Abdul Carter at No. 3. That scenario would leave the Patriots in a spot where the two perceived elite prospects are off the board. In that case, the popular pick would be for New England to take LSU tackle Will Campbell at No.

4. But it’s possible a trade could throw a wrench into that projection. The New England Patriots held their ground Thursday night, selecting their next franchise quarterback despite fielding multiple major offers for the No. 3 pick. The Patriots selected UNC quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, according to a new report, New England rejected trade offers from a pair of NFC teams who desperately wanted to move up the board in Round 1.

We knew the New York Giants (No. 6) and Minnesota Vikings (Nos. 11 and 23) wanted to acquire the No. 3 pick. Numerous pre-draft trade rumors indicated both franchises were pursuing trades with the Patriots. But New England’s new regime, led by de facto general manager Eliot Wolf, rejected offers from both teams, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

In the end, the Patriots stayed at No. 3 and selected Maye, a flawed but undeniably talented prospect. Here’s the full excerpt from Breer’s column published Friday: Send this article to your social connections. Send this article to your social connections. The possibility of a Patriots trade: While speaking to reporters prior to a training camp practice on Monday, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf admitted openly that the team would “consider”...

“Just doing what’s best for the team,” Wolf explained. “If there’s a player out there we feel can help us, and it cost [a high draft pick], then we would consider doing that.” This predictably sent waves around New England as the full ramifications of what Wolf said began to resonate. Still, the reality might be a little disappointing for Patriots fans hoping that this could signal the acquisition of star holdouts like Bengals defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson or Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Though the New England Patriots finished with a dismal 3-14 record in 2024, there are plenty of reasons for optimism as they enter a critical offseason.

They appear to have hit on last year’s first-round selection of quarterback Drake Maye, and hired the most sought-after coach on the market in Mike Vrabel. They have the most cap space in the NFL at $125 million and hold the fourth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. Yet while the fourth pick would allow them to select a potential building block for the future, there are reasons why the Patriots may be willing to trade down. For one, they already have their franchise quarterback and could capitalize on a team desperate to move into position to select Cam Ward or Sheduer Sanders. And with one of the weakest overall rosters in the NFL, they may choose to value quantity of quality and turn the singular first-round pick into a bevy of future selections. On the flip side, the Patriots may also be looking to trade up into the top three selections.

Most analysts believe that pass-rusher Abdul Carter and two-way phenom Travis Hunter are head and shoulders above the rest of the class in terms of game-changing potential, and if the Patriots feel strongly about... The New England Patriots could find themselves in a difficult position when they get on the clock at No. 4 overall Thursday night. The draft isn’t stocked with blue-chip talent as only two players — Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Penn State’s Abdul Carter — really fit that billing. And neither Hunter nor Carter might be available when it’s time for the Patriots to pick. Things might really get dicey for New England if they aren’t sold on LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, either.

If that’s the case, the Patriots could possibly look to trade back and accumulate more draft capital while getting the player they really covet in the first round a few picks later. But that scenario doesn’t look likely, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “The Steelers (No. 21) are among the teams interested in moving back from their first-round slot,” Schefter wrote. “That list also includes the Jaguars (5), Panthers (8), 49ers (11), Falcons (15), Seahawks (18), Buccaneers (19) and Vikings (24), who currently have four picks, the fewest any team. 🎙UPCOMING BROADCASTS: 7 AM - 4 PM, PATRIOTS MONDAY (WEEI SIMULCAST)
