Hosted by Fred Rogers, this episode examines how parents, childcare providers, and kindergarten teachers can get children started on the road to literacy. Children learn to speak and walk by instinct.

But did you know reading is different? Reading needs to be taught. And a child’s first and best teacher is a parent. “If you look at youngsters who come into first grade who can read fairly well, watch what their parents do,” says G. Reid Lyon of the National Institutes of Health. “Parents can be extraordinarily good teachers.” In this program, you’ll visit a baby speech lab and a Head Start center — and also meet children’s book author and illustrator Rosemary Wells (Max and Ruby).

This 30-minute program is the first episode of our award-winning PBS series, Launching Young Readers. In San Jose, California, 32-month-old Mira gets a head start on reading from her parents. At a baby speech lab at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, psychologist Janet Werker studies how babies develop skills that distinguish speech sounds of their native language. "Reading Rocks!" is a show for kids, intended to motivate and encourage them toward reading success. We want children to feel confident in their ability to learn to read. "Reading Rocks!" introduces young viewers to kids with learning differences that temporarily blocked their learning progress. But with the help of parents, teachers, and research-based instruction, all have become readers. How it feels to struggle with reading The Lab School in Washington, D.C., is a safe haven for children with learning disabilities. It is a place where children who learn differently are the rule, not the exception.

By using innovative techniques and placing a heavy emphasis on hands-on experiential learning and the arts, children are able to grasp concepts and talk about their feelings at the same time. In this environment, Ruth and the students in her class were able to explore the emotions of a struggling reader through their original claymation video, "From Zero to Hero." Ben's magical world Ben Buchanan is, by all accounts, an amazing kid. He wrote his first book when he was only eleven years old, and just recently published his second book at the age of thirteen. It's hard to imagine what force could motivate a kid to achieve so much at such a young age. For Ben, it was learning to read.

Ben Buchanan is a diagnosed dyslexic. Starting early to grow strong readers. We once thought a child’s education started in kindergarten — but that could be years too late. Hosted by Reba McEntire, this episode examines what it takes to give our preschoolers the early literacy skills they need to become successful readers. The best predictor of how children will do in school is how much they know before they get there. In Texas, Illinois, Georgia, and Washington, D.C., we’ll meet the dedicated parents, teachers, and researchers who are discovering how to give our children a good start on a great future.

We’ll also visit with children’s book author and illustrator Sandra Boynton, whose playful works delight fans of all ages. This 30-minute program is the tenth episode of our award-winning PBS series, Launching Young Readers. Parents are a child’s first teachers and those early years are key to creating a strong foundation for later reading. The Reach Out and Read program works with pediatricians across the country to help parents and kids start off on the right foot. Parker Child-Parent Center offers a two-pronged approach — a high-quality preschool for kids and research-based literacy training for parents. While the kids attend preschool classes down the hall, energetic teacher Carol Robinson trains parents so that they can help their children become better readers.

If reading came naturally, children would learn to read as easily as they learn to speak. But children don�t learn to read just from being exposed to books or from being read to. Reading must be taught. And for many children, reading must be taught explicitly and systematically, one small step at a time. Millions of children in America can�t read Almost 40 percent of fourth graders nationwide read below the basic level. This means they understand very little of what they read or can barely read at all.

In poor and minority schools, the numbers are even worse. What�s most striking is how quickly the window of opportunity closes for most children. If a child can�t read well by the end of third grade, odds are that he or she will never catch up. The effects of falling behind and feeling like a failure are devastating. As one principal told us, "A child who can�t read soon starts kicking the child who can." The Viewers’ Guide is a companion print guide to our PBS five-part television series, Launching Young Readers.
