Meanwhile, more than 2,000 "No Kings Day" protests were held across the U.S. on Saturday to protest the Trump administration and to counterprogram the military parade in Washington, D.C., organizers said. More than 5 million people participated, according to organizers. The demonstrations remained peaceful in almost all cities, but as the evening grew in Los Angeles, tensions escalated between police and protesters.
A person was critically injured after a shooting "possibly associated" with a demonstration in downtown Salt Lake City, police said. One person was wounded in a shooting Saturday evening that occurred during a "No Kings" protest in Salt Lake City, Utah, officials said. Salt Lake City police said in a post to social media that the shooting was "possibly associated with the demonstration." The victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and a person of interest was in custody, police said. No further details were provided, and the circumstances that led up to the shooting were unclear. Police said about 10,000 people had been taking part in the protest.
"This remains a very fluid situation," police said. Republican Utah Gov. Spencer Cox in a social media post called the shooting "a deeply troubling act of violence" that "has no place in our public square." SEATTLE - Major anti-President Trump protests are being held this Saturday across the U.S., including in Seattle and around Washington.
Called "NO KINGS," local demonstrations are taking aim at "increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption" they assert have been perpetrated by the Trump administration. A national day of action is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 — President Trump's birthday — and will run counter to Trump's military parade planned in Washington, D.C. "In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies," reads a statement from NO KINGS organizers. "We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies."
In Seattle, two separate protests are planned for 12:00–3:00 p.m. One will be at University of Washington's Red Square, the other at Cal Anderson Park in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. SALT LAKE CITY — A shooting during a large "No Kings" protest that left one person critically injured "does not define our city," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said. "The purpose of today's demonstration was a powerful and peaceful expression until this event, and that cannot be overshadowed or silenced by a single act meant to harm," she told reporters a few blocks... "I want to urge everyone in the public to be calm, to give one another grace and to look out for one another tonight in the coming days." Three people also believed to be part of the incident were taken into custody, one of whom was also apparently shot as everything unfolded, according to Salt Lake police.
He was transported to a hospital in serious condition. A motive has yet to be determined, and it was unclear if any of the people knew each other, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd added. Officers responded to a report of a shooting near 151 S. State shortly before 8 p.m. It took place as an estimated 10,000 people marched downtown to protest recent federal policy decisions. A few flurries are possible in New York City's Times Square when the ball drops.
