Our work is currently organized under five key pillars: Despite being a wealthy developed nation, poverty remains a significant issue in the United States compared to many of its economic peers. While physical poverty in the U.S. is less severe than in other parts of the world, poverty conditions still include food insecurity, shelter insecurity, mental health challenges, unemployment, and limited access to basic services. Foundation research has shown that policies like the Child Tax Credit can make a positive impact.

To reduce poverty in America, we need productive dialogue grounded in facts and a clear goal of lifting citizens out of hardship. Humanity Forward’s Bipartisan Policy Council unifies policy experts with a common goal of highlighting bipartisan solutions for the good of the American people. John Bailey is a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and an advisor to the Walton Family Foundation.

His experience has spanned government, philanthropy, and the private sector working on a range of issues including technology, immigration, COVID-19 response, the future of work and economic mobility. Bailey previously served as special assistant to the President for domestic policy at the White House, Deputy Policy Director to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and as Vice President for Policy for Governor Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education. Patrick Brown is a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, where his work focuses on supporting families as the cornerstone of a healthy and flourishing society. Brown has also served as Senior Policy Advisor to Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, where he published reports on child care affordability and education policy. He has written widely on the child tax credit and other family policy topics, including for The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Review, USA Today, The American Conservative, and other outlets.

Griswold is the Policy Director at American Compass, an organization dedicated to restoring an economic consensus that emphasizes the importance of family, community, and industry to the nation’s liberty and prosperity. Prior to his time at American Compass, Griswold was a Congressional staffer, most recently serving as a senior advisor to the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship and legislative staff to Senator Marco Rubio. Samuel Hammond is the Director of Poverty and Welfare Policy at the Niskanen Center. His commentary has been published in the Atlantic, the National Review, and the American Conservative. He previously worked as an economist for the Government of Canada specializing in rural economic development, and as a graduate research fellow for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

His research focuses on the effectiveness of cash transfers in alleviating poverty, and how free markets can be complemented by robust systems of social insurance.
