In Los Angeles, it has been another day of confrontations between law enforcement officials and those protesting the arrest of people in the U.S. without legal status. For a third day – police and protesters faced off. There were various skirmishes involving tear gas, pepper spray, plastic bullets and a few physical encounters. Members of the California National Guard arrived in the Los Angeles area Sunday morning after being activated by President Trump. Federal immigration raids in Los Angeles and nearby last week sparked protests in the city and beyond.

Los Angeles has seen more than a week of protests, held in response to immigration raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The protests started out peacefully before picking up in scale and intensity. CNN reporters on the ground have witnessed officers striking and pushing protesters and deploying tear gas into crowds. President Donald Trump has deployed members of the National Guard to the city after clashes between protesters and law enforcement. He has also mobilized 700 US Marines to help protect federal personnel and property. After a series of immigration raids across the Los Angeles area, demonstrators gathered in various parts of the city to denounce the arrests. In some cases people threw rocks at authorities. Law enforcement’s response—including tear gas, arrests, and the deployment of troops—transformed the city into a flashpoint over immigration enforcement.

By Sunday, hundreds of National Guard troops patrolled a federal building on the orders of President Trump, who bypassed state leadership in calling up the soldiers. The city of Los Angeles has become the center of a growing national crisis. What began with a weekend of coordinated ICE raids quickly escalated into protests in LA that have left the city reeling. As videos of clashes, tear gas, and bloodied protesters flood social media, it’s clear this wasn’t just another demonstration—it was a breaking point. For many immigrant families, the fear had been building for years. But this time, the response was different.

More than 100 people were detained, many during daylight operations at well-known businesses, including two Home Depot stores and a clothing wholesaler. The message many residents heard loud and clear: no place is safe—not even your workplace or your local store. Community organizers called the raids “deliberate intimidation,” and within hours, demonstrations began erupting across the city.
