If you are a student just getting started with Excel, check out our new Excel Tutorials for Beginners. Download our free monthly budget spreadsheet and get your personal finances under control. Compare your budget and actual spending on a monthly basis. Also try our yearly personal budget to make a budget for an entire year.
If you have a family, try our family budget planner for a more detailed set of budget categories. This spreadsheet helps you compare your monthly budget to your actual expenditures, and can be printed on a single page in portrait orientation. The difference between your budget and actual spending is calculated and formatted to make it easy to find out where you may be overspending. License: Private Use (not for distribution or resale) To use this template, just fill in numbers that are highlighted with a light-blue background (the Budget and Actual columns). Some numbers are included in the Home Expenses category as an example, but you'll want to replace those numbers with your own.
The purpose of this type of budget worksheet is to compare your monthly budget with your actual income and expenses. You record your desired budget for each category in the "Budget" column. This represents your goal - you're trying to keep from spending more than this amount. At the end of the month, you record in the "Actual" column how much you really spent during the month. Excel templates are great tools for boosting productivity. They allow you to do some amazing things with only a basic understanding of spreadsheets.
Microsoft offers a variety of templates that you can access by opening Excel and going to File > New. For more options, check out the hundreds of professionally designed Excel templates available from Jon Wittwer and his team at Vertex42.com. This page lists our most popular spreadsheet templates. If you are looking for solutions specifically for your business, see our Business Templates page. All of our templates were originally created for Microsoft Excel, but most of them are also available for OpenOffice.org and Google Sheets. Many people like to budget based on their weekly or bi-weekly paycheck, so I've created two weekly budget templates designed for that purpose.

The second is a multi-week budget planner that can help you analyze and plan for future expenses and cash flows. These weekly budget templates are a fairly new addition to Vertex42.com. So, if you have comments or questions about them, please go to the following blog post to give feedback or ask your questions. License: Private Use (not for distribution or resale) This template works for a weekly, biweekly, or monthly budget.
Like my original Money Management template, you can customize budget categories and track multiple accounts, but this version includes everything in a single worksheet and uses fewer budget categories. Although it lacks some features of the original template, I designed it to be easier to use (requiring very little Excel experience). You can make a copy of the budget worksheet for each budget period. The main disadvantage of this approach is that your transaction data is split across multiple worksheets, making it more difficult to create yearly reports. This template is great for when you are first learning to budget and track your money, but it's easier to do more detailed analysis if your transaction data is in one register, like in...
