OpenNews is dedicated to amplifying the impact of journalism code through Source, its SRCCON conference, live collaboration events, and more. The current version of Source was designed by Ethan Marcotte and brought into being by Ethan, then-editor Erin Kissane, and our own Ryan Pitts. Source is edited by Lindsay Muscato. Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project The code emerging from newsrooms drives innovation across the web, and the community writing it is talented, dedicated, and growing fast. Our community hub, Source spotlights that community and dives deep into the code it’s making. No code is written in a vacuum, and that’s especially true in journalism, where the news of the day influences the lines of code written to research, report, and interpret it. Our pieces connect the code with its context, using the journalistic approach of “Who, What, Why, When, and How” to exploring the motivations, ideas, and innovations behind the lines of code. We’ve built the shape of the community into the very source code of Source itself, collecting data around people and organizations with every article we write and every line of code we index.

News organizations are hungry for skilled developers and data wranglers who want to do journalism development, data-wrangling, and visualization work full time—and many of the positions are open even to those with no prior... (photo/Erik Westra) At OpenNews, we believe that a community of peers working, learning and solving problems together can create a stronger, more representative, and ascendant journalism. We organize events and community supports to strengthen and sustain this ecosystem.

In-person events are an important way that this community shares its work, learns from one another, and grows as a network. Learn more about the kinds of events we run and how to participate. As this network matures, we have a slate of offerings to help share work and understand what’s happening in the journalism tech community. We seek out multiple ways to connect and celebrate each other. OpenNews supports a network of developers, designers, journalists, and editors by celebrating successes, documenting what works for making change, and connecting people with colleagues and resources in the field. Through our slate of programs, OpenNews provides capacity-building and infrastructural support to this network of leaders bringing technical innovation and a collaborative, equity-focused way of working to their news organizations.

We love creating events that are highly participatory and inclusive, where participants come first so they can can feel comfortable digging into complex problems. In addition to our events, look for us at NICAR, the Collaborative Journalism Conference, the News Product Alliance Summit and other events where we host community meals and gatherings to foster connection. We seek out ways to make it easy for members of this community to learn from each other, share successes and challenges, and get an understanding of what needs to change in the field. We publish Source, a site where community members document their projects and the processes behind their work. Every month, community members also share about their work on an open community call. The News Nerd Survey has helped to understand the landscape, and unique perspective, of the technology community in journalism.

The OpenNews team is part of a community of journalists creating a future where we can work in newsrooms that are anti-racist, equitable, inclusive, and collaborative. Jessica Morrison is Co-Director of OpenNews, where she works on fundraising, community partnerships, and supporting journalists who are changing the way their newsrooms operate for the better. Previously, she was a science policy reporter and then led product strategy and development at Chemical & Engineering News. With a background in chemistry and journalism, her career has followed her curiosity and enthusiasm to connect with ideas and people. Jessica is based in Nashville, Tenn., where she founded the Baking Notification Project, a network of home bakers building community with their neighbors through baked goods.

(jessica@opennews.org) John Hernandez is Co-Director of OpenNews, where he focuses on connecting journalists to one another to support the cross-pollination of ideas and advancing discourse in the field to inspire more action. Previously, he worked as assistant director of audience at The Texas Tribune where he supported the development of community engagement practices and Latino/a/e/x outreach strategies. John is based in Austin, Texas and enjoys photographing live music, finding secret swimming spots and exploring Texas’ state parks. Ryan Pitts was Co-Director of OpenNews, where he helped community members develop collaborative, inclusive programs for journalism events, and connected people with resources (and each other!) in ways that continue to help make their... (Sometimes he also wrote little scrapers and bots that made it easier for us to publish our work.) He now serves as managing director at Big Local News, a program of Stanford University’s Journalism... Previously, he worked in many roles in local newsrooms before managing news apps and product development at The Spokesman-Review. He is also a board member, developer, and trainer for Census Reporter, a project that makes census data easier for journalists to use.
