Many people were shocked and horrified at the death of a 31-year-old husband and father, while some lamented his loss as a voice for their beliefs. But there were some areas of the internet that turned celebratory, as people pointed out that Kirk's beliefs included that Black people and women are inferior, transgender people shouldn't be respected, and that people...

For several of these people celebrating, they quickly found themselves fired after sharing their posts about Kirk's death. Here's what we know about the situation. A Florida college fired a woman after she shared her political views of Charlie Kirk following his death, accusing her of celebrating the conservative commentator’s killing, a federal lawsuit says. Erika Santos, of Brevard County, who worked as a grant accountant at Eastern Florida State College, made two posts about Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, on her private Facebook page on... 10, the day he was fatally shot, according to a complaint she filed Nov. 12 in the Middle District of Florida.

That afternoon, Kirk was publicly killed at a Turning Point event at Utah Valley University. Santos added her own commentary to the posts she reshared from other social media pages, expressing that she disagreed with Kirk politically, the complaint says. One of the social media page’s post criticized Kirk as against abortion, immigration, women’s rights and called him “very racist.” Santos’ comments, which were only public to her Facebook friends, did not express she supported Kirk’s killing or violence, as later suggested by Eastern Florida State College, according to the filing. The college was alerted to her posts, then ultimately fired her in retaliation for what she shared privately, her attorneys argue in the complaint, saying, her social media content is protected by the First... Far-right influencers and violent extremists are posting identifying details about people they view as celebrating or glorifying the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

The campaign has been swift and widespread and has already led to at least one person losing their job and others receiving death threats. The people posting the identifying information include Chaya Raichik, who runs the hugely influential, hate-filled LibsofTikTok account on X, Trump-whisperer Laura Loomer, and former Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio. A central hub of this activity is a website called Charlie’s Murderers, which was registered in the early evening on the day Kirk was shot and is revealing certain personal information, such as social... Among those flagged was Lydia Fettig, a professor and academic advisor at the University of Michigan, who allegedly called Kirk’s killing “prudent” and “rational.” As the nation grapples with the Sept. 10 assassination of Charlie Kirk, some people have found themselves out of a job for their response to the violence. Public figures, academics and everyday business owners have faced consequences for comments and social media posts that contained celebrations or other musings that attracted swift condemnation. A similar phenomenon happened in the wake of the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, who in 2024 was campaigning for office.

The backlash continued on Sept. 13, with reports of a Secret Service agent, Office Depot worker, junior Nasdaq employee and a U.S. Marine all on leave or fired in recent days. "No matter how private your life is, everybody has an audience," said Karen North, a professor of digital social media at the University of Southern California and a psychologist, told USA TODAY in 2024...
