The 24 videos for each grade were selected to support fall-readiness for students as they prepare to enter the next grade in mathematics. While there are far more than 24 essential lessons at each grade, we identified key lessons aligned to major work of the grade that are necessary for students to find success in math at... A few things to note as you look through these videos:

Evaluating Quadratic and Exponential Functions These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 4 support success in that lesson. The purpose of this Math Talk is to elicit strategies and understandings students have for evaluating expressions with exponents. These understandings help students develop fluency and will be helpful later in this lesson when students will need to be able to evaluate more complicated expressions that involve exponents. In this activity, students have an opportunity to notice and make use of structure (MP7) because properties of exponents can be used to rewrite expressions so that they are easier to evaluate. Display one problem at a time.

Give students quiet think time for each problem and ask them to give a signal when they have an answer and a strategy. Keep all problems displayed throughout the talk. Follow with a whole-class discussion. Teachers with a valid work email address can click here to register or sign in for free access to Student Response. In this unit, students study quadratic functions systematically. They look at patterns which grow quadratically and contrast them with linear and exponential growth.

Then they examine other quadratic relationships via tables, graphs, and equations, gaining appreciation for some of the special features of quadratic functions and the situations they represent. They analyze equivalent quadratic expressions and how these expressions help to reveal important behavior of the associated quadratic function and its graph. They gain an appreciation for the factored, standard, and vertex forms of a quadratic function and use these forms to solve problems. Illustrative Math is a series of video lessons highlighting critical math content for students in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 (Algebra I). Illustrative Math was created in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education, Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB), Illustrative Math (IM), and SchoolKit. No future air times were found for this episode.
