How about this for some Patriots magic? Drake Maye flashes MVP-level athleticism by staying on his feet long enough to hit Stefon Diggs despite a pass rusher hanging from his legs, then delivers a pinpoint dart to Kayshon Boutte along the... What a performance from Mike Vrabel's team on the road against a Super Bowl favorite. This one should have Pats fans celebrating all night. Well, folks, we're back in a deadlock, and we have Josh Allen to thank for it. The Bills quarterback somehow manages to evade just about every Patriots defensive linemen on back-to-back plays, rolling right, drifting around and between rushers before launching two throws, one all the way out of the...

Allen is fortunate he didn't suffer an injury or give the ball away while extending each play, but his supersized acrobatics follow enough movement by Joe Brady's unit to set up a game-tying 45-yard... The underrated tale of this matchup: A lack of discipline. We've seen some feisty defense from both sides, particularly New England, but with just a few minutes to play, the Bills and Patriots have combined for 18 penalties amounting to 173 penalty yards. That's not a small amount. New England's last infraction helped stall Drake Maye and the offense on a three-and-out, providing Buffalo a chance to retake the lead in the closing minutes. Mike Vrabel wants a disciplined Patriots bunch, but a late hit by defensive tackle Joshua Farmer on James Cook gifts the Bills 15 yards and a first down in scoring range.

Josh Allen does the rest from there, trucking through contact for a rushing first down of his own, then lacing a pass to Keon Coleman for a touchdown. We've still got almost a full quarter to play, and Diggs is up to 134 yards on nine catches. That easily leads both teams. Not only that, but the veteran is showcasing his trademark route-running and post-catch toughness on some highlight-reel grabs, including a long catch-and-run that puts New England right back in the red zone for another... Safe to say Diggs arrived at Highmark Stadium motivated to put on a show. And most importantly, it has his new team on top, with Drake Maye and Co.

going blow for blow with Josh Allen's Bills. To those who saw Sunday night's signature win for the Patriots over the Bills in Buffalo as a breakout performance for second-year QB Drake Maye, welcome to the party. Last week, we wrote that Maye was making the year-two leap right before our eyes following a rout of the Panthers, where the second-year quarterback posted a 93.3 QBR (out of 100). During his rookie season, there were flashes of Maye's franchise quarterback potential. However, the offense wasn't ready to support his talents, and the then first-year passer was going through the typical rookie growing pains of staying aggressive while keeping the ball out of harm's way. This season, Maye has been rapidly improving in all areas, heading into Week 5 as the third-best passer in the league in total expected points added (EPA, +33.9).

The former first-round pick was hitting all the layups within the offense's structure, playmaking on the move and inside the pocket and the turnover-worthy plays were beginning to settle down. After five weeks, he is now sixth in expected points added per drop-back (+0.29), and following another turnover-free performance, Maye is now ninth-best in turnover-worthy play rate among 33 qualified QBs (2.0%). Although all the signs were there before Sunday night's win, Maye's primetime performance had a few newer developments. The most obvious is that the Pats QB recorded his first game-winning drive of his young career against a playoff-caliber opponent. From this perspective, there were even more "put the team on his back" moments compared to Maye's first four games this season. By my count, Maye had 11 'plus' plays, including seven in the final two quarters.

That's not unusual for Maye, per se, but OC Josh McDaniels was cooking things up scheme-wise over the last few weeks. In the first four weeks of the season, Maye had a high rate of "open window" throws thanks to McDaniels scheming open receivers. On Sunday night, Maye was elevating the scheme, with multiple off-script dimes and a career-high four big-time throws. For example, Maye made a miraculous throw while being dragged down to hit WR Stefon Diggs in the flat (12 yards) and hit the cover-two hole shot to Kayshon Boutte (19 yards) to get... Maye had to beat Buffalo with traditional drop-back passing, and he passed the litmus test against the undefeated Bills with flying colors. On an unusually sloppy night for the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots got a clutch performance from quarterback Drake Maye and a game-winning 52-yard field goal from rookie kicker Andres Borregales to pull...

Maye was 22-of-30 for 273 yards. He made several key plays on the game-winning drive, but the one that started it all showed his ability to make plays. Maye stiff-armed the defender and somehow made this throw to Stefon Diggs for the first down before the two-minute warning.

Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler gets his first win; the Panthers take down the Dolphins; and the Commanders got a big road win against the Chargers. In his first primetime game, the New England Patriots' QB1 walked into Highmark Stadium and led a 23-20 upset over the previously unbeaten Buffalo Bills and star QB Josh Allen. The 2024 No. 3 overall pick, Maye's game came down to a gutsy final drive that included multiple tough completions into traffic. Rookie kicker Andy Borregales then nailed a 52-yarder with 15 seconds to go, giving Buffalo almost no time at a legitimate final shot. The win moved New England to 3-2 as the franchise continues its hopeful upward trend in Maye's sophomore season, while Buffalo dropped to 4-1. Sherfield (toe) was a full participant in Thursday's practice. Sherfield did not participate in Wednesday's practice due to a toe issue, but the injury doesn't appear to be severe as he was able to practice Thursday without limitations. Given his full practice, he should be available for Sunday's AFC West clash against the Chiefs. Sherfield caught three passes (on four targets) for 21 yards through the first five games of the regular season, but he has not recorded a target over the Broncos' last five games. 'BSD' made a massive statement in taking out the veteran so quickly in the first round Stefon Diggs believes Drake Maye took a big step in the Patriots’ shocking win over the Bills

It's not a stretch to say Drake Maye had never played in an environment like the one he saw in Orchard Park. On the road. In the division. Prime time. Against the reigning league MVP. Against the Super Bowl favorites from the AFC.

In all, there were three turnovers and 10 penalties between these two AFC East rivals, but it was New England who went into the break with a slim field goal lead. Each stabilized to a degree as they traded off touchdowns to begin the second half, but it was the Patriots that pulled away late.’
