Patriots Qb Drake Maye Stresses Importance Of Starting Fast Vs Jaguars
Drake Maye met with the media in London ahead of the Patriots matchup vs. Jacksonville. He spoke about the Patriots offensive mindset vs. Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars. The New England Patriots are not a high-powered offensive team. They enter Week 7 as the second-lowest scoring team in the NFL at just 13.8 points per game.
Simply put: They are not a team built to play from behind if the opponent jumps out to an early lead. That's why it's so important for the Patriots to get off to a good start in Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at London's Wembley Stadium. That's why it's so important for the Patriots to get off to a good start in Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at London's Wembley Stadium. Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye mentioned starting fast during his press conference Friday. As difficult as it is to stomach the Patriots six-game losing streak, rookie QB Drake Maye brings some intrigue and production to the passing game offensively. With the Patriots trying to build a foundation for the head coach Jerod Mayo era this season, Maye's development is the most important aspect of New England's rebuild.
Although the passing offense has woken up a bit with Maye as the starter over the last two games, the goal isn't to be better than the 29th-ranked passing offense in drop-back EPA through... Instead, we want to see Maye help elevate the offense into a viable unit that can be among the NFL's elite someday. That isn't a fair bar right now given that the Patriots are still rebuilding Maye's supporting cast, but at some point, that's the expectation. As we load data into the spreadsheet with every Maye start, we'll eventually have a large enough sample size to compare Maye to the rest of the league. For now, we have 82 drop-backs to evaluate the rookie's performance. Although that's too small a sample to make sweeping proclamations, we have a film review to write today.
Among 35 quarterbacks with at least 32 drop-backs in the last two weeks, Maye currently ranks 22nd in expected points added per drop-back (+0.05), 18th in drop-back success rate (45.6%), and 16th in completion... He's also tied for third with four deep completions and tied for fifth with three big-time throws. With seven explosive pass plays in two starts, the Pats have already surpassed their total in their first five games with Jacoby Brissett (6). Maye's turnover-worthy play rate (5.4%) is higher than Brissett's (3.5%), but that's the give-and-take you have with a young playmaker. FOXBORO — Head Coach Jerod Mayo emphasized the importance of the Patriots starting faster in upcoming games. (AP Photo/Steve Luciano) The New England Patriots suffered an embarrassing 32-16 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday. After getting up 10-0 in the first quarter, they were dominated and emasculated over the final three quarters at Wembley Stadium. “We’re a soft football team across the board,” head coach Jerod Mayo rightly said after watching his defense give up 171 rushing yards on 39 carries. ” … Back to the drawing board.” There was a bright spot, however, as rookie quarterback Drake Maye played well in his second NFL start.
The No. 3 overall pick completed 26 of 37 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns while taking two sacks and finishing with a 109.7 passer rating. Maye earned a respectable B-minus grade (63.7) using Pro Football Network’s proprietary QB+ Metric. “I thought Drake did a good job, especially starting the game off fast,” Mayo said. “He made some good throws; he made some plays with his legs.” Maye stresses importance of starting quickly against Jaguars in London originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The New England Patriots are not a high-powered offensive team. They enter Week 7 as the second worst-scoring team in the NFL with just 13.8 points per game. Simply put: this is not a team designed to play from behind if the opponent takes an early advantage. This is why it’s so important that the Patriots get off to a good start during Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London. Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye mentioned a fast start during his press conference Friday. FOXBOROUGH, Mass.
-- When newly-appointed starting center Ben Brown assessed what it was like working with rookie quarterback Drake Maye in Maye's starting NFL debut Sunday, he noted his presence. "His confidence makes me confident. It makes the whole offense and team confident," Brown said. "Seeing that from someone at such a younger age, being a rookie, is special to see." Maye's performance in the Patriots' 41-21 loss to the Texans was one of the silver linings for a slumping team that has lost five in a row and now travels to London to face... ET, NFL Network).
Maye was 20-of-33 for 243 yards, with three touchdowns, two interceptions and one lost fumble. He added five rushes for 38 yards. "Drake did a good job with his reads and getting the ball out," head coach Jerod Mayo said. "Was it perfect? No. Will he get better?
Absolutely." At this point, after the offensive debacle that was the New England Patriots’ 15-10 loss Sunday, it seems like the only remaining question is not if the Pats make a quarterback change, but when. Will they bench Jacoby Brissett and start Drake Maye in five days or in six? Because the way coach Jerod Mayo spoke in his Monday morning news conference, change is coming. It now seems just a question of whether the Pats make the switch for their home game on Sunday against the 4-1 Houston Texans or wait until the Monday after to anoint Maye as... Do they pick the home game against the tougher team?
Or the weird week of prep (that includes an international flight) against a lesser team? We’re asking those questions because, on Monday, Mayo struck a drastically different tone. The coach who for four weeks defended Brissett at every turn, preached patience and stressed the importance of sticking to the team’s plan for developing Maye instead left the door open for the switch... Mayo used to say things like this, which he said a week ago: “Jacoby is 100 percent our starter.” New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is impressing during offseason workouts as he gets immersed in Josh McDaniels' system. By all accounts, the second-year quarterback has flashed in recent sessions, including Monday's mandatory minicamp practice.
