Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Tom Brady revealed this week his current dog was a clone of his beloved former canine companion after it passed away in 2023. The New England Patriots have been working on cloning a goat, the goat. Sure, Drake Maye is no goat, nor a dog. A dawg, perhaps.

And while he is no clone of the seven-time Super Bowl champion governing the 'greatest of all time' debate, he may well be the desperately-yearned long-term answer to a quarterback void that could never... But behind Maye, the Patriots are relevant again, dangerous again, and contenders again. — Early in the third quarter, after the latest of Drake Maye’s wild plays that leave one wondering how in the world he pulls them off, the New England Patriots huddled, the ball 11... Maye tried to yell out the play call from Josh McDaniels, but his teammates in the huddle couldn’t hear him. Offensive linemen had to wave their arms, begging the home crowd to quiet down because the “M-V-P” chants were too loud. Maye, fittingly, then promptly threw a beauty of a touchdown to the back of the end zone on a night when, even if his numbers weren’t off the charts, he showed a national audience... Maye has had better games and played in bigger games, but few have done more to boost and validate his MVP stock, given how he shined during the prime-time showcase of a 27-14 “Thursday... After roughly half a decade's absence from real Super Bowl contention, there's no need to deny reality anymore.

The 8-2 New England Patriots are back. Doubt Mike Vrabel's bunch at your own risk because they are a wagon. The biggest reason the Patriots are once again a superpower is the play of second-year quarterback Drake Maye. The former No. 3 overall draft pick has blossomed into a veritable superstar this season. At the time of this writing, Maye is on pace for over 4,300 yards passing, 32 touchdown passes, and just nine interceptions.

Oh, and he's also completing nearly 72 percent of his passes with a robust 8.9 yards per pass attempt while sitting No. 2 overall amongst all quarterbacks in composite Expected Points Added (EPA) and Completion Percentage Over Expected (CPOE). If I didn't know any better, that sounds like an NFL MVP-caliber season for Maye. Well, that's because it is. The question now is whether Maye really does have a legit shot of winning MVP in just his second season. Outside of Maye's stellar play, the best way to assess this is to see his current competition.

Let's take a quick look at the tale of the tape, at the time of publishing: Drake Maye finds himself in a club featuring Tom Brady and Peyton Manning following his incredible start to the New England Patriots‘ 2025 season. Maye has been making strides in his game throughout his second year in the league, helping the Patriots surge in the AFC standings. They are rolling with six straight wins, controlling the top spot of the AFC East Division. Halfway through the season, Maye has completed 189 passes for 2,285 yards and 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also added 59 rushes for 270 yards and two touchdowns himself, showing off as a dual-threat quarterback.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk talked about the stars who are in the running for the MVP award this season. He named Maye as one of those players, mentioning how he pulled off his eighth straight game of having 200 or more passing yards and a passer rating of 100 or higher. “Maye’s 200/100 streak has only been accomplished by three other players in NFL history. Each (Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers, twice) won MVP in the season when they did it,” Florio wrote. Drake Maye is filling Tom Brady’s shoes just fine so far in New England. The Patriots quarterback went off on Sunday afternoon and matched Brady while leading the team to a dominant 31-13 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The victory, New England's fourth straight, pushed the Patriots to 5-2 on the season. Maye was nearly perfect on Sunday at Nissan Stadium. He went 21-of-23 passing for 222 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He had another 62 rushing yards on eight carries. That made him the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to complete 90% of his passes, throw for more than 200 yards and rush for more than 50 yards in a single game. That stat is one of several incredible figures to come out of Maye’s performance.

He’s now the first quarterback in Patriots history to complete more than 90% of his passes in a game with at least 20 attempts, something not even Brady accomplished. Maye is also the fourth player in the Super Bowl era to have at least two passing touchdowns, two or fewer incompletions and at least 60 rushing yards in a single game. Lamar Jackson, Robert Griffin III and Walter Payton were the other three to pull that off. Maye also matched Brady, the future Hall of Famer who led the Patriots dynasty to six Super Bowl championships, with the most games in team history in a single season with at least 200... Maye has four this season, something Brady did during the 2007 season. FOXBOROUGH, MA.

— New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has never been one to rest on his laurels. However, as the “MVP” chants rang throughout the chilly night air surrounding Gillette Stadium during the team’s 27-14 victory over the New York Jets in Week 11, the 23-year-old could not help but marvel... “I thought the fans were awesome,” Maye said with a smile from his postgame podium. “I think it was pretty sweet for the prime time game … my first one at home. It was pretty sweet … I’m just glad we won.” New England’s Week 11 victory over theJets improved the Patriots’ record to 9-2, securing their first winning season since 2021 when they finished with a 10-7 record.

Historically, this season is now the Pats’ 36th winning campaign since the 1970 merger, second only to the 41 winning seasons by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Though several Patriots players have significantly contributed to their streak of success, the one constant throughout the season has been Maye. The third overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft completed 25-of-34 passes for 281 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions against New York. For the season, Maye has totaled 20 touchdowns, in contrast to only five interceptions. During New England’s current eight-game winning streak, the UNC product has thrown 15 touchdowns to only three interceptions. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that Maye is earning deserved mentions as a strong candidate for NFL MVP.

Perhaps best known for his elite arm strength, the 6’4” 225-pounder also possesses the velocity and touch on the ball to make any throw required of him. Maye has also been equally touted for his exceptional athleticism. When the play breaks down, he possesses both the agility and instinct to turn off-script options into big gains. In fact, Maye has carried the ball 70 times for 285 yards and two touchdowns this season — only adding to his multi-dimensional mystique.
