Patriots Predicted To Land 108 Million Star Wide Receiver In Free
The New England Patriots have a lot to be excited about. The team just signed Mike Vrabel as the 16th head coach of the franchise. Read more: Patriots Hire Mike Vrabel as Head Coach With Multi-Year Agreement: Report Vrabel returns to the Patriots after spending the 2001 to 2008 seasons with the team as a linebacker. He would secure three Super Bowl victories during New England's dominant run under Bill Belichick. Now, Vrabel is back to lead the team.
The good news is he is also entering a great situation for a rebuild. The Patriots lead the NFL in projected cap space in 2025, coming in at around $120 million. They also own the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, along with having a young upstart quarterback in Drake Maye. The New England Patriots need to prioritize putting appropriate weapons around quarterback Drake Maye heading into his sophomore campaign, because right now, things are pretty barren. Maye does not have a No.
1 receiver at his disposal, and there really may not even be a legitimate No. 2 wide out on the roster. Obviously, the Patriots are hoping to swing big in free agency and/or trades, but they must also land a couple of pieces via the NFL Draft. That's something New England did not do last year, when it missed badly on wide receivers Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker. This time around, the Pats will have a plethora of intriguing receivers to choose from, as it is a pretty deep class at the position. At least in terms of Day 2 talents.
Tee Higgins is expected to be football’s most-wanted player once free agency begins in March. Everyone wants to know, where will the Cincinnati Bengals star land when all is said and done? Higgins just turned 26 years old in January after finishing his fifth NFL season. Needless to say, the 6’4″, 219-pound receiver is in his prime. He’ll have his choice of suitors in free agency, with various teams predicted to throw big money at him, maybe as much as $30 million per season. The Bengals haven’t been ruled out to sign Higgins to an extension, but it seems like a long shot with a slew of other marquee players they need to lock up.
Ja’Marr Chase is one big name looking for a “what’s fair” contract. Meanwhile, the smart money has Higgins being the odd man out. The bean counters don’t see enough money in the coffers for the Bengals to bring him back. The question is, where will Higgins end up? Previewing this year’s wide receiver class ahead of free agency. The New England Patriots are expected to be among the most active teams in NFL free agency this offseason.
Not only do they have holes all over their roster and several crucial areas that need to be addressed, they also have vast resources to play with: New England is tops in the league... It seems likely that some of those resources will be invested in the wide receiver room, either via free agency or the trade market. If the Patriots opt to go the first of those routes, their options have been limited a bit thanks to the Cincinnati Bengals franchise-tagging Tee Higgins. Nonetheless, there are some players potentially worth pursuing as part of a bigger overall strategy to increase production at the position. The Patriots have numbers at the wide receiver position heading toward free agency, with currently seven players signed for 2025. Sitting atop the depth chart are last year’s top three, Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne and DeMario Douglas; Boutte established himself as the starting outside/X-receiver, Bourne served as the top Z coming off his ACL...
Beyond those three, New England also has two members of its 2024 draft class on the roster. Second-rounder Ja’Lynn Polk and fourth-rounder Javon Baker both disappointed during their rookie seasons, but for now remain in a position to show the new coaching staff that they can still be of value to... The New England Patriots are not going to bounce back and make the playoffs this season. They simply don't have the team that can make that kind of a run. However, that doesn't mean that there is a dull outlook for the Patriots looking ahead to the future. Jerod Mayo and company have a ton of young talent on the roster to build around.
This season was all about development and beginning a new culture with Mayo leading the way. In the offseason, New England will have the ability to make moves to bolster the roster and try to make a run at the playoffs in 2025. One area that the team will need to address is at wide receiver. They need a legitimate No. 1 option for rookie quarterback Drake Maye. There is a good chance that they could find that player in free agency during the offseason.
Despite going 4-13 in both 2023 and 2024, the New England Patriots are in a good spot. They have a widely respected head coach in Mike Vrabel and an up-and-coming Pro Bowl quarterback in Drake Maye. But beyond those two pieces, the team needs serious work to take the next step. Offensively and defensively, there are glaring holes that need to be addressed. Perhaps the first order of business is finding elite weapons for Maye. As good as he was in his rookie season, having the right pieces around him could elevate his ceiling.
Last season, a porous offensive line and a lack of playmakers led to a rough year for the Patriots’ offense. They finished in the bottom seven of PFSN’s Offense+ metric (26th), with an offensive line that ranked among the three worst in the league in PFSN’s OL+ metric. But what hurt them more was the lack of production from their receiving corps. Hunter Henry led all Patriots players with 674 receiving yards, and DeMario Douglas was the only wide receiver to top 600 yards. Suffice it to say, their production didn’t meet expectations.
