patriots make announcement on potential for first round draft msn

The New England Patriots find themselves in a precarious position in the 2025 NFL Draft. Currently armed with the No. 4 overall selection, there's a chance the team comes up just short of landing a prime-time talent. Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter and Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter are widely viewed as the top two players atop the draft. While the Tennessee Titans are all but locked in to taking Miami quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1 overall, the Cleveland Browns (No.

2) and New York Giants (No. 3) both seem to be shying away from taking Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, despite their drastic need of a building block signal-caller. If Sanders' stock continues to drop and both Cleveland and New York pass on him, that'll result in both Carter and Hunter coming off the board before the Patriots are even on the clock. So what do they do from there? Well, they could simply draft for need and take LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell or maybe further bolster the defensive trenches with Michigan defensive lineman Mason Graham. Or they could look to move down.

In that spirit, we've cooked up a couple of trade-down possibilities for New England in the first round with the assumption that Carter or Hunter is not available to them. We also highlighted one possibility where the Patriots could TRADE UP back into the first round to address another critical need on the depth chart. Sure, the Raiders traded for Geno Smith earlier this offseason and inked him to a two-year extension, but I don't think that'll preclude them from exploring the quarterback market in the NFL Draft. After all, Smith is going to turn 35 years old next season, so it might be best to get out in front of that position and have a signal-caller develop behind him. Of course, Las Vegas could simply wait to see if Sanders falls to them at No. 6, but if they like the player they could ensure they land him by moving up just a couple of picks to No.

4 with New England. From a Patriots perspective, they'd probably be thrilled to move down a few spots, gain an asset (maybe another Day 2 pick) and still come away with a talent they would've been comfortable taking... Las Vegas has the fifth pick in the second round (No. 37 overall) and the fourth pick in the third round (No. 68 overall) 🎙UPCOMING BROADCASTS: 7 AM - 4 PM, PATRIOTS MONDAY (WEEI SIMULCAST)

On this edition of Patriots All Access, go behind the scenes in his first 24 hours with the Patriots #1 pick Will Campbell. Plus, we recap the Patriots entire draft with Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf, and take you inside the Patriots Draft Room. All that and more on this episode of Patriots All Access. Patriots Director of College Scouting Cam Williams breaks down what happens when an NFL team goes on the clock at the NFL Draft. Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf sits down with Scott Zolak to look back at the Patriots 2025 Draft Class. Patriots.com writers Mike Dussault, Paul Perillo and Evan Lazar go down the list of New England's 11 draft picks, analyzing their college careers and potential roles on the Patriots 2025 roster.

Based on what ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. is hearing, the first four picks in the 2025 NFL Draft are pretty much set. The Patriots are expected to take Will Campbell after Cam Ward, Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter go off the board with the first three selections, respectively. The Athletic’s Chad Graff has the same read on the earliest picks Thursday night. In fact, the Patriots insider believes it would be “shocking” if New England took any other player besides Campbell at No. 4.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t another move Mike Vrabel and company would like to make early on draft night. “For a fair deal, they’d love to move back,” Graff wrote in a column published Thursday night. “They have a lot of needs, which more draft picks could help address, and this is a draft where, after the first three picks, the next group of 15 or so players is largely... So that’s why the Patriots would be interested in moving back: getting a similarly-rated player plus additional bites at the draft apple. “The problem is that two league sources expressed skepticism that anyone makes the Pats what they’d deem to be a fair offer for the No. 4 pick.

So they’ll likely have to stick and pick.” So, even if New England is more or less settled on Campbell as its first-round pick, it sounds like the phone lines in Foxboro, Mass., will be opened until the card is turned in. And when you consider how much desperation and excitement can grow on Draft Day, who knows, maybe the Patriots will receive an offer they can’t refuse. The New England Patriots entered this offseason intent on making waves in their attempt to rebuild a roster which finished 4-13 last season. However, might they be saving their biggest splash for the 2025 NFL Draft? The Pats, per NFL Insider Tony Pauline, may “pull a surprise” by selecting Georgia edge rusher Jalon Walker with the fourth overall pick.

“On Monday, separate sources confirmed Jalon Walker as potentially the Patriots’ choice, which is the second time I heard that name coupled with New England,” Pauline reported via Sportskeeda. “That would throw a curveball at the top of the draft, but it makes sense considering the franchise is now being led by Mike Vrabel, a defensive-minded coach.” Walker has been consistently heralded among the top pass rushers in this year’s draft cycle. The 6-1, 243-pound linebacker collected 34 quarterback pressures, 11 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks for the Bulldogs in 2024. His ability to play both on and off of the line of scrimmage makes him a particularly intriguing prospect for New England’s new-look defense. Walker’s pass-rush tenacity, combined with his ability to compress and close lanes for opposing runners, fits well within the aggressive style expected to be instituted under Vrabel and coordinator Terrell Williams.

As such, it should come as little surprise that a source has confirmed to New England Patriots On SI that the Pats “have been, and remain highly impressed” by Walker throughout the draft cycle... The New England Patriots need a fresh start after finishing 4-13 for the second consecutive season. The once-dominant franchise has struggled to find success in the post-Tom Brady era, but a major change at the top could be the start of something special. Former Patriots star linebacker and three-time Super Bowl champion Mike Vrabel was hired as the team’s new head coach, and he could have the team trending in the right direction right away with a... Since losing Julian Edelman, New England’s wide receiver room has been a debilitating weakness. No Patriots receiver has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards since Edelman in 2019.

In 2024, the Patriots’ passing attack ranked near the bottom of the league, with tight end Hunter Henry leading the team in receiving yards. The Patriots were after Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin during the offseason but only managed to sign Mack Hollins. However, the former Atlanta Hawks receiver has only crossed 500 yards once in his career. As a result, New England has their eyes set on the draft and is predicted to draft Hunter fourth overall in PFSN’s latest seven-round mock draft by Jacob Infante. “It looks like the New England Patriots have their quarterback in Drake Maye. They could go in several directions with the No.

4 pick, but taking the best player available is the smartest move. The New England Patriots are a team in transition. Everything is in flux, from a new Head Coach and his coaching staff to a new player personnel guy to the necessity for a total roster transformation. Mike Vrabel has to make the 2025 offseason as successful as last year's, which was a total flop (absent Drake Maye). Good teams are molded in the offseason. As for the Patriots in 2024, an offseason that fails inevitably leads to a similar season.

It ain't rocket science. There is no season in the NFL, or any other league for that matter, than the one in front of you. Any other is an illusion. The Patriots have to build for and plan to win now. Vrabel has to spend well and sign only the best possible free agents at positions of need. In the draft, forget to trade down for "value." Draft a few players who improve your team at key positions and forget anything else.

There's one player in the draft who warrants a major investment. It's Colorado's Travis Hunter. If Mike Vrabel isn't convinced that you win with top players and scout and bring in the rest, then this theory can be thrown out the window. The speculation here is that he's very astute and knows you only win with enough top players. He'll act accordingly. The best player in the draft and college football is Travis Hunter, who excels at not one but two positions: wide receiver, a top Patriots need, and cornerback.

A meaningless, foolish win against the Buffalo Bills B-team in January tossed the number one pick out and also may have sealed the fate of then-Head Coach Jerod Mayo. The New England Patriots are at a critical juncture as they look to build a team capable of returning to Super Bowl contention. With a revamped offense and a solid foundation on defense, the Patriots’ success in the 2025 NFL Draft will depend on shoring up areas that can make an immediate impact. Offensive line depth and secondary play are two areas of focus, and the first round presents an opportunity to address these needs with top-tier talent. Here are five prospects who could be ideal fits for the Patriots in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. One of the Patriots‘ top priorities should be improving their offensive line.

Although they’ve invested in the position recently, there’s always room for upgrades, especially in a division with high-caliber pass rushers. Armand Membou from Missouri is a versatile offensive lineman with a combination of size, power, and athleticism. Whether lining up at guard or tackle, Membou has the potential to be a day-one starter in the NFL. His ability to protect the quarterback and create space in the run game would be a massive boost for the Patriots’ offense, especially as they work to better support their young quarterback and running... Another key piece for the Patriots’ offensive line could come in the form of Will Campbell from LSU. A standout in both pass protection and run blocking, Campbell brings tremendous power and a high football IQ to the table.

Known for his quick feet and ability to anchor against power rushers, Campbell has all the tools to be an immediate contributor for the Patriots. Adding a talented, athletic lineman like Campbell would give New England much-needed stability in the trenches and could help develop a balanced offensive attack. While the Patriots’ defense is often stout, they could use an upgrade along the defensive line. Michigan’s Mason Graham is an ideal candidate to improve their interior line play. Known for his strong base and ability to clog running lanes, Graham is an excellent tackler who can also provide pressure on the quarterback. His ability to disrupt plays in the backfield while maintaining solid gap control makes him a perfect fit for New England’s defensive scheme.
