All told, Robert Kraft and the rest of Patriots brass will have a lot to consider once the season is completed. Once it was beyond apparent that Robert Kraft would be moving on from Jerod Mayo after just one season as the Patriots' head coach, Mike Vrabel was the top candidate to be his successor.

So when it was announced that he accepted the head coaching gig, excitement about the future of the franchise skyrocketed almost immediately. It's put Vrabel in an interesting position in his first year as the head coach since expectations are far higher than they have been in quite some time. And it goes beyond just the New England fans hyping up what they can accomplish in 2025. Many in the national media suggest a potential playoff run is in play, now that they have an upgraded team and morale appears back in a positive place. That was a significant issue under Mayo during the 2024 season, as he appeared to stray too far from what Bill Belichick was so successful with during his tenure in Foxboro. The former linebacker wanted to establish his own culture, which made sense, but there was too much of a focus on catchy slogans across the locker room and even on t-shirts at practice.

Vrabel is officially tasked with rebuilding the Patriots after the team finished 4-13 under former coach Jerod Mayo last season. There's hope that Vrabel's toughness and experience will lead to a culture change in New England. Vrabel is viewed as a players' coach, but he's also a no-nonsense leader. He's going to coach up a gritty and hard-nosed football team. Whether that's enough for the team to start winning games right out of the gates remains to be seen.

Former New England Patriots legend and Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law spoke about the current state of the team and head coach Jerod Mayo. Specifically, Law addressed Mayo’s coaching style during an appearance on WEEI’s "The Greg Hill Show." Law was a key defensive contributor during his career with the Patriots. He was also on some of the best defensive units in franchise history. He experienced Bill Belichick's coaching style firsthand and how that coaching led to success. He noted that he isn't seeing that same level of involvement with Mayo.

"He has to do something, other than just delegating and stay there coaching, get the stuff back through his microphone," said Law. "You have to be an active participant, not only coaching the team, but if need be, going into that offensive huddle on the sidelines, doing those adjustments at halftime. "If you need to get on your defense, you know what? Get off the sidelines. 'Hey, offensive coordinator, I need to go talk to the defense because they soft as hell.'" The New England Patriots promoted their inside linebackers coach, Jerod Mayo, to head coach after parting ways with Bill Belichick last season.

However, the franchise fired the 38-year-old only a year later after finishing the season with a 4-13 record. Mayo’s final win over the Buffalo Bills in the regular-season finale was costly, dropping New England from the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to No. 4 overall. Now, the Patriots will be on the lookout for their second coach in as many years. The Athletic’s Chad Graff reported a questionable incident involving the ex-Patriots head coach.

When the team was on its way back following a 30-17 loss against the Arizona Cardinals, Mayo chose to play cards with players instead of analyzing the film with the coaching staff. It was New England’s fourth straight defeat, taking their season record to 3-11. “Look, there are a lot of ways to do the job. It’s not that Jerod’s was definitely wrong. But I can’t say I’ve seen that before,” a Patriots executive told Graff.
