Ever since Drake Maye became the starting quarterback at North Carolina, he has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Those comparisons didn’t stop in college. When Maye was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, they only grew louder. As he enters his second year in the league, Maye is finally speaking out about the Allen comparisons. Being compared to Josh Allen is never a bad thing, especially when you’re a young up-and-coming quarterback in the NFL like Drake Maye.

Allen has been a superstar since he entered the league in 2018, throwing for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns in seven seasons, and winning the NFL MVP in 2024. While it’s something Maye can take pride in, he made it clear on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast that he knows he hasn’t earned those comparisons yet. "He's so versatile. I think that's what makes it so tough on defenses is what he can do, extend plays, play in the pocket. In the running game, he has the extra hat, and he's commanding the offense. He's been doing that for a while at a very high level, and like I said, it's fun to watch, but now we're playing against him." Even at just 2-2 and without having faced the stiffest of competition to this point, the Patriots have gotten a remarkable four-game stretch from second-year quarterback Drake Maye, and likely got the best performance... I think what he dealt with, whether coming out of college or his first years here, I feel like everybody was just kind of not giving him the credit he deserved. Now, you can see kind of the full fruition of what he’s doing and the level he’s playing at. Just, like I said, fun to watch, and I think I’ve got a long way to go to get to anywhere close to playing at his level.”
