The Network’s contest submission forms have tabs for NON-MEMBERS and for MEMBERS. Please be mindful of which tab you select as submission fees differ depending on membership. Contact us at mail@ncwriters.org if you have any additional questions. Are you a writer seeking to get published? Whether already published or this is your first attempt at getting published, then Submittable is a tool you need to help you accomplish those goals. When I submit to literary magazines, I wait for their emails of acceptance and sometimes it gets buried in my inbox . After months of waiting for a response from a literary journal, it is a rejection email. In other days, I don’t get any email.

I am confused whether to go on and submit elsewhere. Should I take prolonged delayed response as a rejection? In this blog post, I will share a tool or website that makes submission easy. For writers, getting your work published and recognized is a step toward realizing your goals as an author. However, finding the right contests or publications can be a challenging and time consuming. Authors now have the opportunity to find and submit their writing to magazines, publishers, and contests through a website called Submittable.

To get started submitting your content, first learn what Submittable is, the benefits for authors, how to use it, and tips for success. Submittable is a submission management system for the literary world and beyond. While it was largely designed to help publishers manage submissions for publications and contests, it helps writers, too. Save time: No need to spend hours searching the Internet for publishing opportunities or writing contests. Submittable gives you access to hundreds of open calls for submissions all in one place. Target your search: Through Submittable's website, you can find exactly what you're looking for—whether you want to publish a romance novel, enter a short story contest, or publish a poem in a magazine.

Target your search using criteria such as keywords, genre, entry cost, or deadline. Monitor the progress of submissions: You are updated on the progress of your submission, so you don't have to just send off your work and hope they received it. You can also use the website to manage withdrawals and edits if necessary. We will be pausing our submissions as our team is undergoing some major transitions. We will update our Submittable with our new submission schedule as soon as we are able. Thank you so much for your patience!

We cannot wait to read your work again soon. We are interested in quality fiction, poetry, nonfiction, photo essays, author interviews, and reviews of new books of poetry and prose. We impose no restrictions on category or type of submission for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. We only accept writing that has not been previously published, whether in print or online. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but we ask that you notify us of this at the time of submission. If your submission has been accepted elsewhere, please withdraw the piece or make a note via Submittable.

Multiple submissions are not accepted and will not be read. Please wait until you receive a response from us before submitting again. Please allow four to six months for a decision and submit no more than twice a year. Contributors to our print issues receive a contributor copy. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to offer monetary payment to our contributors. Recent contributors, please wait at least one year from when your work appears in The Journal before submitting again.

Fiction: We welcome literary fiction submissions of all forms, including those that incorporate experimental or genre elements. Though we generally do not publish straight genre fiction, we are always excited to read speculative work and frequently publish non-realist fiction. We encourage submissions from all marginalized people, including but not limited to people of color, LGBTIA and the gender non-conforming, and those with disabilities. I’ve been publishing and submitting poetry (and short fiction) for over a decade and I’ve come across several online managers during this time (RIP Tell it Slant), so I thought it might be fun... First up to bat is the classic monolith, Duotrope. Here you can find a long list of magazines, anthologies, or presses due to Duotrope’s length of time online (since 2005).

When you see a publication listed on Duotrope, there is a sense of respect and pride that comes with that. Duotrope states they have 7,500 publications listed and also heralds that “Unlike other resources, we don’t wait for information to come to us. Instead, we check each active listing’s guidelines page for changes once a month on average.” How does it handle? Last year, I tried out Duotrope for a free trial. Why?

Because I was very interested in the all the data you can gather such as acceptance rates, the average length of time I will hear back from a publication, and I like how you... I also appreciate that Duotrope takes note (in the top red box) of publications that charge fees but don’t pay writers. I like the features for submitting to agents but did not utilize this. The upcoming deadline calendar is a nice touch and could help you find something new, if you got something ready! Overall, though, I was not a fan of finding new or unfamiliar publications to submit to. I like data, don’t get me wrong, but I was overwhelmed with how selective you can get.

It was visually a lot to process. You can see how detailed you can get below:
