Giants QB Jaxson Dart exited Sunday's loss against the Bears because of a concussion. Patrick McDermott / Getty Images CHICAGO — If the scene that unfolded with Jaxson Dart on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field felt all too familiar, that’s because it was. The New York Giants’ rookie quarterback entered the NFL’s concussion protocol for the fourth time in four months, spanning his preseason debut and seven regular-season starts. Before Sunday, he had cleared that protocol three times, but amid the Giants’ crushing 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears, he was unable to do so again. Dart entered the blue medical tent between the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, with the Giants driving to extend their 17-10 lead.

Dart had played the final snaps of the third quarter, so when backup Russell Wilson entered the game to start the fourth, it took many by surprise, including some of his Giants’ teammates. When Dart finally exited the medical tent after being evaluated, he didn’t rush out to find his helmet and seamlessly hop back into the huddle, as he had twice before this season. Instead, Dart slowly walked down the Giants’ sideline and into the locker room as the game carried on without him. The New York Giants’ No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, quarterback Jaxson Dart, named the one NFL rule he would change if he could. Although the New York Giants look to be planning on starting Russell Wilson at quarterback when the 2025 season begins, rookie Jaxson Dart may start gaining on him pretty quickly.

The Giants’ first selection in this year’s draft is already preparing to be the starter, even if he isn’t - just in case. Dart started out at USC, but transferred to Ole Miss, where he finished his last season with 4,279 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, adding 495 yards and three scores on the ground. As he gets ready to enter the big leagues, Dart was asked by Formula One presenter Lissie Mackintosh how it feels to be a part of the Giants team. He said it’s exactly where he wants to be and is excited to get things going. After some F1 banter, Mackintosh also asked Dart if there was any rule he would change in the NFL. After some considerable thought, Dart settled on the kickoff rule, saying it should go “back to what it was”.

The New York Giants are 0-2 in the current season. As the pressure mounts, the spotlight isn’t just on Russell Wilson; it’s quietly shifting to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Drafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Dart was brought in as the team’s potential future at the position. But for now, he finds himself holding a clipboard on Sundays, learning the ropes behind a veteran who’s keeping the job, for the moment. Dart entered training camp with plenty of buzz. His poise, arm strength, and mobility made him one of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s draft class.

And when the preseason rolled around, he lived up to the hype. In the pre-season, Dart threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, also flashing his legs with a rushing score. Even during a brief concussion scare in the final preseason game, he bounced back quickly, showing resilience and toughness. By all accounts, he looked NFL-ready. The Giants, however, have a long-term strategy. They have chosen the “Patrick Mahomes rookie treatment” rather than hurriedly bringing Dart onto the field.

That means he’s learning the playbook, acclimating to NFL speed, spending time on the scout team, and observing Wilson as he copes with the demands of being a starting quarterback in New York.
