Quantum computing is a new approach to computation that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to solve problems that are beyond the capabilities of traditional computers. It was first proposed by the famed physicist Richard Feynman in 1981 at a conference in Dedham, a suburb of Boston, where he suggested using quantum systems to simulate complex phenomena. Unlike traditional bits, which can only represent 0 or 1, quantum bits (called qubits) can exist in a “superposition” of both states simultaneously, enabling them to process multiple possibilities at once. This ability allows quantum computers to perform certain calculations much faster than traditional computers. Researchers from institutions such as the Harvard Quantum Initiative in Science and Engineering (HQI) and the Engineering Quantum Systems Group (EQuS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will also collaborate at the center.
