Quantum computing is a new approach to computation that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to solve problems that are beyond the capabilities of traditional computers. It was first proposed by the famed physicist Richard Feynman in 1981 at a conference in Dedham, a suburb of Boston, where he suggested using quantum systems to simulate complex phenomena. Unlike traditional bits, which can only represent 0 or 1, quantum bits (called qubits) can exist in a “superposition” of both states simultaneously, enabling them to process multiple possibilities at once. NVIDIA announced on Monday the establishment of a Boston-based research center dedicated to advancing quantum computing through artificial intelligence (AI) and accelerated computing technologies. The NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC) will integrate quantum hardware with AI supercomputers, a concept known as accelerated quantum supercomputing, to address some of the most pressing challenges in the field. These include mitigating qubit noise and developing practical applications for quantum processors. "Quantum computing will augment AI supercomputers to tackle some of the world's most important problems, from drug discovery to materials development," NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. "The NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center is where breakthroughs will be made to create large-scale, useful, accelerated quantum supercomputers." Researchers from institutions such as the Harvard Quantum Initiative in Science and Engineering (HQI) and the Engineering Quantum Systems Group (EQuS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will also collaborate at the center. In theory, a quantum computer could perform calculations vastly more quickly than today’s conventional computers and unravel mysteries in chemistry and physics while helping discover new drugs and new materials. But despite decades of effort since Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman proposed the idea in 1982, no one has yet perfected a quantum computer that outperforms a conventional computer. The industry is getting closer and closer, however.
Last week, Nvidia announced it would open a research lab in the Boston area dedicated to advancing quantum computing. “The primary reason we settled on Boston is really the incredible research community,” said Sam Stanwyck, group product manager for quantum computing at Nvidia. “Boston is home to two of the best universities in the world ... many other great universities, a huge wealth of technical talent, and many, many great companies.”
