Nvidia Ceo Sends Blunt 7 Word Message On Quantum Computing
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang admits he missed the mark on quantum computing's future. He backpedaled comments he made in January, when he said “useful” applications for the technology are 20 years away. His remarks at the time sent quantum computing stocks tumbling. But during Nvidia’s “Quantum Day” event on Thursday, Huang revised his projected timeline and said “this is the first event in history where a company CEO invites all of the guests to explain why... Jensen Huang just revised his stance on the quantum computing timeline, even acknowledging that a quantum company could one day surpass NVIDIA. Rather than backtracking, he embraced the industry’s momentum, reinforcing NVIDIA’s commitment to the quantum future.

Admitting 'I was wrong,' NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's recent apology at GTC 2025 underscores the rapid advancements in quantum computing. His January remarks predicting useful quantum computers were decades away led to significant stock sell-offs for companies like Rigetti, IonQ, and D-Wave. At GTC, Huang acknowledged his misjudgment and invited leaders from these firms to discuss their progress. He emphasized rethinking quantum computers as scientific instruments and highlighted the potential of hybrid systems combining quantum and classical computing. Despite his apology, quantum computing stocks continued to decline, reflecting ongoing market skepticism. This episode reminds us of the importance of staying informed and adaptable in the face of technological evolution.

In January 2025, Huang sent shockwaves through the tech sector when he said he believed quantum computing was likely at least 15 years away from having practical applications. This unexpected take caused quantum computing stocks to plunge into a freefall, while experts contested his argument. 💵💰Don’t miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet’s free daily newsletter💰💵
This week, Huang addressed this area of technology again, offering a new take that starkly contrasts with his earlier one. The Nvidia CEO has made it clear that his perspective on quantum computing has changed, predicting that an important moment is approaching for the industry. Many quantum computing stocks have performed well this year, even as they continue to be overshadowed by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). But now an AI leader is shining a light on the technology’s progress and growth potential. What a difference five months makes. Back in January, Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang told the crowd at CES 2025 that quantum computing was a technology that was decades away from being ready for practical use.
It sent the entire sector crashing lower. Fast-forward to yesterday, and Huang seems to be singing a different tune. Speaking at Nvidia's Paris GTC conference, the CEO said "we are within reach" of applying quantum computers “in areas that can solve some interesting problems in the coming years." In particular, Huang said "there is an inflection point happening in quantum computing" with more logical qubits being created and over time they will be better, more robust, and of higher performance than what... The endorsement sent several quantum computing stocks soaring, with Quantum Computing (QUBT) leading the way with a 25% gain for the day. Rigetti Computing (RGTI) was up 11% and Arqit Quantum (ARQQ) was 8% higher.
The sector's response was uneven, however, as both D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) and IonQ (IONQ) fell on the day, down 2% and 0.1%, respectively. Nvidia (NVDA) kicked off this week with a keynote address at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025 that included several key updates. CEO Jensen Huang left audiences excited about the company’s future as NVDA stock trended upward. 🎁 Don’t Miss This Amazing Holiday Move! Buy 1 Year and Get 1 Year FREE on TheStreet Pro. The next day, Huang spoke at a Q&A with Wall Street analysts, sharing his take on several key matters. The conversation didn’t focus strictly on artificial intelligence (AI), though. Huang also addressed quantum computing, another fast-growing area of technology that is threatening to overshadow AI in 2025. Throughout the current AI boom, quantum computing companies have quietly been making advancements, offering previews as to what the next phase of technology could look like. Huang doesn’t seem worried about that happening, though. He made it clear that he believes quantum computing is far from an immediate threat to his industry or company, setting a timeline for the technology that spans multiple decades.
