(AP Photo/Mike Stewart) The Jets parted ways with two of their best players at the trade deadline. Only time will tell if their decision to deal them will prove costly. Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams represented two of the precious few bright spots on New York's team in recent seasons.
Both All-Pro talents, Gardner and Williams were among the biggest reasons why the Jets' defense flourished during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. All good things come to an end, though. And amid another lackluster start to the year, New York opted to sell high for two of its most appealing performers. The Jets sent Gardner to the Colts and Williams to the Cowboys, blowing up their already-precarious defense in one swoop. They were rewarded handsomely for it. Here's a complete look at the assets New York acquired in exchange for Gardner and Williams' services.
It was always going to take a king's ransom to pry Gardner out of the Big Apple. In the end, the Colts parted ways with 2024 second-rounder Adonai Mitchell as well as two first-round picks to land their man. That'a a comparable return to what the Cowboys got when they sent Micah Parsons to the Packers. The New York Jets stole all the headlines (including ours) by trading away two of their best players in cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, in exchange for a haul of draft... It’s all about the future now for the Jets. The same, however, cannot be said for the Indianapolis Colts, who sent a pair of first-rounders to New York for Gardner. The Colts clearly believe the AFC is up for grabs, and they pushed their chips to the center. Of course, the Gardner and Williams deals weren’t the only ones of significance made in the past 24 hours. There have been plenty of moves that could change the course of the season, and we’ve broken them all down here, providing some brief thoughts, analysis and, of course, trade grades for every deal...
The New Orleans Saints traded offensive lineman Trevor Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2027 sixth-round pick, league sources told The Athletic. The Chargers have one of the best young tackle tandems in the NFL with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. Problematically, however, both are done for the season with injuries. The Indianapolis Colts have made what will go down as the most surprising trade of the 2025 NFL trade deadline. The Colts have acquired star cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets in exchange for two first-round picks and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. According to CBS Sports Research, Gardner is the sixth player to be traded in-season for multiple first-round picks in the last 40 years.
Believe it or not, the Cots were involved in half of these six trades, as they acquired running back Eric Dickerson from the Los Angeles Rams for multiple first-round picks in 1987, and linebacker... Jones reports that the Jets were not actively shopping their No. 1 cornerback, but the return from Indy was too good for the front office to pass up. Gardner appeared to confirm the news himself, posting on social media, "New York it's been real." Colts general manager Chris Ballard issued a statement following the blockbuster trade, saying that Gardner is going to elevate the Colts defense as a whole. "Having the opportunity to acquire a talented player like Sauce Gardner was one we did not want to pass on.
He was a player that we scouted heavily coming out of college and there's a reason he was the fourth overall pick. Sauce is a proven cornerback. His skill and competitive nature will elevate everyone's play on the defensive unit. We're thrilled he's a Colt. On the same note, AD Mitchell is a great person and a great player. We believe he will have success in New York, and we wish him the best as he enters the next chapter of his career."
If there's one thing that's clear about NFL trade deadline day, it's that the New York Jets are in full rebuild mode. Shortly after sending shockwaves around the league by trading All-Pro and Defensive Rookie of the Year winner in cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts, the Jets weren't done there, and they still likely... Now it's defensive tackle Quinnen Williams' turn, as the All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday afternoon. In return, the Jets received a 2026-second round pick, a 2027 first-round selection and defensive tackle Mazi Smith from Dallas. With less than an hour until the 4 p.m. trade deadline, it seems as if the Jets aren't done yet with players such as running back Breece Hall, linebacker Quincy Williams and potentially others expected to be on the move if deals go...
Former NFL executive Joe Banner joins “The Rich Eisen Show” to weigh in on the Jets trading Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. (1:09) Additional reporting by Jeremy Fowler, Stephen Holder and Dan Graziano AT A STONE church on a hill, in a pastoral town only two miles from their training facility, the New York Jets paid their respect to a franchise icon Tuesday morning in Madison, New... More than 400 mourners packed into St. Vincent Martyr for Nick Mangold's funeral Mass, 10 days after the beloved center died because of complications from kidney disease at age 41.
Jets general manager Darren Mougey was among the last to arrive, walking purposefully into the church as a bagpiper filled the crisp autumn air with strains of sorrow. Mougey wore a dark suit and the expression of a man whose mind was racing. Five hours remained until the NFL trade deadline at 4 p.m. ET, and he was sitting on a couple of blockbusters. Mougey stood in the back of the church ("A beautiful service," he would say later) and slipped out before it was over, heading back to the office for urgent business. Back at St.
Vincent, about three dozen of Mangold's former teammates from the Jets and Ohio State congregated outside the church after the Mass, exchanging hugs and wiping tears. The casket was placed in the hearse, bagpiper playing again. A solemn moment. The NFL trade deadline came and went at 4 p.m., and the Colts' move to land cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets stood as the biggest move of the year – and... The Colts traded their 2026 and 2027 first-round picks, along with wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, to the Jets in exchange for Gardner, the 25-year-old two-time first-team AP All-Pro cornerback. The last time a team traded a first round pick for a player during a season was 2022, when the Miami Dolphins sent one first-round pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for edge...
A cornerback hasn't been traded for a first-round pick since the Los Angeles Rams sent two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Jalen Ramsey in October 2019. The Colts weren't the only team to trade a first-round pick to the Jets before Tuesday's deadline; the Dallas Cowboys sent a first-round pick, a second-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith to the... The Colts' trade for Gardner was the franchise's first in-season trade since 2022, when the Colts traded running back Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills for running back Zack Moss and a 2023 fifth-round...
