Some use it to try and break down complicated stories or bits of information for "explain like I'm 5" consumption. Others use it to make funny images of cats doing human things, like using toilets or smoking cigars (or both at the same time). As it turns out, the power of AI is all in how you use it – or, better yet, how you make it work for you. That's been the learning curve for the NFL Connect team during mock draft season.

Similar to using draft simulators, USA TODAY Sports has produced countless AI-generated mock drafts, which have tried to challenge the expertise of Mel Kiper Jr. Instead, rather than providing draft-altering analysis and opinion, those AI mock drafts have made a mockery of mock draft season (and with much worse hair). NFL analysts have been attempting to predict the NFL draft for decades since Mel Kiper Jr. and Joel Buchsbaum popularized coverage of the event in the 1980s. Mocking the draft is often a difficult pursuit. With that in mind, USA TODAY Sports decided to see what type of mock draft an artificial intelligence chatbot might put together. For this exercise, Meta AI was used to determine the first-round picks in the 2025 NFL draft a few weeks ahead of the event. Meta wasn't quite able to create a full mock draft by itself, so it was prompted to make the mock on a pick-by-pick basis. The mixed results showed the limitations of having AI predict such an event. Notably, Meta decided not to include two notable prospects – Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren – in its first round. The duo has broadly been mocked as top-15 selections, so seeing both slide out of the first 32 picks would be surprising.

According to Perplexity, the Browns will select cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter from the University of Colorado, another pick that almost every expert agrees on. The AI chatbot said, “Hunter is considered one of the most unique and talented prospects in recent memory due to his ability to play at an elite level on both offense and defense.” There are two types of fans in the NFL – those who look ahead to the playoffs and those who look ahead to the draft.

As we flip the page to Week 2 of the regular season, panic is already setting in for some teams across the league. Draft season might be months away from really ramping up, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take stock of where we stand right now. With that in mind, we asked artificial intelligence (AI), specifically Microsoft’s Copilot, for some help in determining the results for the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Copilot views him as “a polished receiver with excellent route-running skills” who can upgrade Miami’s offense. That said, the Dolphins probably need offensive line and defensive help with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine making a solid trio atop the team’s receiver depth chart.

As such, this pick seems unlikely.” Golden works all three levels of the field with similar consistency and productivity. The answer that AI generated for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers certainly felt pretty shocking considering some of their recent moves in free agency. A fun exercise at USA Today took place when the publication used an AI tool to predict the entire first round of the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
