The New England Patriots were one of the busiest teams in the NFL this offseason, overhauling a roster that was probably the worst in the league last year. The Patriots entered free agency with more cap room than any team in football, and their aggressive moves made that very obvious. They also clearly entered the NFL Draft with a mission and did a terrific job accomplishing it. However, did New England potentially miss something in its effort to drastically improve its roster? Josh Edwards of CBS Sports thinks so, specifically noting that the Pats may have been a bit too hasty in adding aging players to a rebuilding franchise. "There is no question that New England improved its roster, but has it been at the expense of the long-term vision?" Edwards asked.

"Veterans Morgan Moses, Carlton Davis, Harold Landry and Stefon Diggs have already constructed fruitful careers, but may not be counted upon for more than a year or two." The New England Patriots are turning heads throughout the entire NFL. ESPN analyst and former Patriots offensive lineman Damien Woody made a bold declaration on the team during an episode of “Get Up!” this week. "The road to the Super Bowl in the AFC is going through Foxborough....If my man [Tedy] Bruschi was here, we'd be like, 'We're baaack!,'" said Woody. The Patriots have remained hot since their blowout win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 4. They have won their last seven straight games, including their recent upset win on the road over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Quarterback Drake Maye has jumped to the top of the NFL MVP odds, and Mike Vrabel is currently in the running for Coach of the Year. It all probably sounds like a doomsday scenario for fans of other teams that watched the Patriots' 19-year run of dominance with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. For Patriots fans, however, it's music to their ears. The New England Patriots made several key moves this offseason, enhancing their coaching staff and adding to the roster across all positions. However, one ESPN analyst wasn’t as content with all their offseason additions, giving the Patriots a fairly harsh grade. It's no secret that the New England Patriots have extensive work to do over the coming offseason months. With another 4-13 season in the books and an abundance of holes on the roster, the Patriots brass will no doubt be turning every stone to improve this squad heading into the 2025 year. Yet, among their biggest needs on the books could lie within their situation upfront of the offensive line. New England had consistent problems with their protection spanning across the 2024 season.

But now with the offseason upon us, the Patriots could get aggressive in pursuit of stacking the trenches up. The Athletic's Chad Graff sees the Patriots being ambitious in improving their offensive line –– noting the group as the team's biggest need for this coming offseason, also predicting some major turnover on the... The New England Patriots made a number of changes this offseason completely separating themselves from the two decades of dynastic success at the turn of the century. In a recent article for The Athletic, NFL analyst Mike Sando listed an offseason move for every team that he liked the most, and for the Patriots, he chose the signing of veteran quarterback... Here's what Sando had to say about the decision: "Signing Jacoby Brissett so that rookie Drake Maye might not have to play right away buys runway for a team that is rebuilding.

Have the Patriots done a better-than-advertised setting up Maye for success? If we're only looking at free-agent signings, Brissett is probably the best pick, as New England didn't add many veterans despite having a ton of cap space open. The New England Patriots have received short shrift from some observers who don't rate the team's accomplishments in the 2025 offseason highly. One has head-scratchingly suggested the Patriots rank 26th in their power rankings.

So much for sober analysis. Mike Vrabel was hired in January 2025 and dramatically reshaped the roster into a team that will carry his vision of a successful NFL team onto the field. Any resemblance between the 2025 Patriots and the dreadful 2024 version will be superficial. Everything has changed under Vrabel, and the results will be immediately visible when the Patriots take the field at Gillette Stadium on September 7 against the Raiders. Only the best parts of the cellar-dwelling 2024 version of the team will still be around. One top national analyst "gets it" in his analysis of the Patriots and what Vrabel has done to remake his roster.

He also astutely recognizes that Vrabel's young quarterback, Drake Maye (without whose presence he'd probably be coaching elsewhere), will be a massive influence on the success he predicts for the 2025 Patriots. Because of that, CBS Sports ' Tyler Sullivan has suggested the Patriots are a good bet to make the 2025 playoffs.
