Simply put, they set the bar for a successful rebuild, and as they threaten to end the Buffalo Bills' divisional dynasty, New England looks like everything New York aspires to be. The Patriots hit on the head coach. They hit on the quarterback. And a team in disarray just a season ago looks like one of the best teams in football, both in the short- and long-term.

New York's search for a quarterback will continue into April -- perhaps all the way to the 2027 NFL Draft. But the Jets have significant draft capital and a chance to thrust themselves back into relevance. Round 1, Pick 5: Arvell Reese, LB, Ohio State The New England Patriots make a major splash on draft night, trading down from No. 4 to No. 10 in a blockbuster deal with the Chicago Bears.

The move allowed the Bears to land Penn State EDGE Abdul Carter, while New England added premium draft capital and retooled its offense around second-year quarterback Drake Maye. With five picks in the top 77, head coach Mike Vrabel and de facto GM Eliot Wolf focused on upgrading the offense and reinforcing the line of scrimmage. Round 1, Pick 10 (via CHI): Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise StateBoise State’s Ashton Jeanty gives the Patriots a dynamic, three-down weapon out of the backfield. Jeanty’s blend of burst, balance, and receiving skills offers a perfect fit alongside Drake Maye as New England transitions to a more explosive and modern offense. With Rhamondre Stevenson entering a contract year, Jeanty gives the Patriots a long-term answer and day-one contributor. Round 2, Pick 38: Elic Ayomanor, WR, StanfordThe Patriots continue investing in weapons for Maye with Elic Ayomanor, a big-bodied receiver with strong hands and deceptive speed.

Ayomanor emerged as a breakout star at Stanford, using his physicality and route-running to create separation and make contested catches. He adds size and reliability to a wide receiver room that desperately needed an injection of talent. Round 2, Pick 39 (via CHI): Donovan Jackson, OT, Ohio StateAfter bolstering the skill positions, New England turns its attention to protecting the quarterback. Donovan Jackson is a versatile and battle-tested lineman who brings power and athleticism to the offensive line. Capable of playing both guard and tackle, Jackson offers immediate depth and long-term starter potential on a line that’s in flux. Round 3, Pick 69: Shemar Turner, DI, Texas A&MShemar Turner is a disruptive interior presence with the ability to collapse pockets and defend the run.

At 6’4″, 290 pounds, Turner brings versatility and upside to a defensive front that lost several key contributors in recent seasons. He’ll fit nicely in New England’s multiple-look scheme and can rotate early while developing into a key piece. The New England Patriots are about to undergo a ton of changes this offseason. New England already replaced Jerod Mayo with Mike Vrabel. Now they are not set up well to make wholesale changes to their roster that could have a huge impact during the 2025 season. New England enters the offseason with roughly $128 million in cap space to spend.

That gives them the most available cap space in the NFL by a considerable margin. They will enter free agency in a great position to outmaneuver other NFL teams and drive up prices on several players at once. The Patriots could certainly use that to their advantage to bring in multiple difference makers in one offseason. This is great news for a team that has needs at almost every position on the roster. In fact, quarterback may be the only position New England has figured out thanks to Drake Maye. The Patriots also have nine picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, including four selections in the top 100 selections.

Those picks include the fourth overall pick, which should allow New England to grab one of the best non-QB prospects in this year's draft. But with so many options to choose from, which players will the Patriots end up pursuing in the 2025 NFL Draft? The New England Patriots face a transformative draft this upcoming year, the first true rookie class in their attempt at a full rebuild. With the Pats zeroing in on a top five pick, the expectation is that they will take a quarterback, and SI projects they will do so with North Carolina's Drake Maye. "No team in this draft needs something more than the Pats need a franchise quarterback," writes Sports Illustrated in its new three-round mock draft. "Regardless of whether or not Bill Belichick returns next season, New England has to swing big under center, and they're in position to do just that with this pick."

Maye is going to need some protection alongside him if he comes to New England, and that comes in the form of Arizona tackle Jordan Morgan in the second round. "Morgan has absolutely got the goods," Athlon Sports says of Morgan. "He’s got a prototypical build, would appear to have some positional flexibility, and offers a strong mix of power and mobility." If the New England Patriots had made the bold decision to hire Ben Johnson they might have added a lot of offensive weaponry for Drake Maye via the 2025 NFL Draft. Instead, they hired Mike Vrabel. Now New England needs to bolster their defensive options to take full advantage of their new coach's talents.

That does not mean New England's front office will completely ignore their offensive needs. Finding more offensive line talent to protect Maye is still an offseason priority. Vrabel's hiring does mean that the majority of the Patriots' premium picks will be designed to upgrade a defense that desperately needs playmakers and more versatility. New England does have the benefit of an extra third-round pick to work with. Here's how Rounds 1-3 should play out for the Patriots. If Travis Hunter is still on the board when New England picks at four they should sprint to the podium to obtain his rights.

His ability to be a true one-on-one specialist can change the match for the Patriots' front seven. Having him out on an island will make it much easier for his team to bring an extra man on the blitz. Hunter could also make an offensive impact for the Patriots. Vrabel does seem like the kind of coach who would be open to the idea of a unique talent like Hunter playing both ways.
