(Photo courtesy of Missouri Governor’s Office) A bill dedicating $2.2 million to support deployment of Missouri National Guard soldiers and State Highway Patrol troopers to Texas for border security on Wednesday became the first bill sent this year to Gov. MIke Parson. In February, Parson announced he would send 200 soldiers and 11 troopers to work with Texas law enforcement at the request of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
He asked for the money to avoid dipping into emergency funds allocated for disasters or other events within the state. The bill, which passed the House almost six weeks ago, encountered little opposition as it passed 30-2, but it did bring a round of questions from state Sen. Denny Hoskins, a Warrensburg Republican who was stripped of his seat on the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this year. Hoskins wanted to know the living arrangements for the deployed personnel and what $91,000 set aside for vehicle purchases was buying. Gov. Mike Parson signed a supplemental appropriations bill that funds the deployment of Missouri soldiers and troopers into law on Wednesday after visiting the southern border of Texas.
The bill includes $2 million in funding for Missouri's southern border deployment, aiding Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star. "President Biden and the federal government have failed. They're allowing fentanyl and other drugs, criminals, and even suspected terrorists to flood across the border into our country. States must take a stand, and that's exactly what Missouri is doing," Parson said. "The more crime we can stop at the Southern Border, the less we have to deal with in Missouri.
We appreciate the strong group of bipartisan lawmakers for approving this funding and understanding the need for Missouri to step in when the federal government has failed our citizens." Gov. Mike Parson was joined Wednesday by Missouri National Guard Adjutant General Levon Cumpton and Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Victor Escalon. Parson issued an executive order on Feb. 20 that activated 200 Missouri National Guard (MONG) members and 22 Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers to the southern border, according to past KOMU 8 reporting. Missouri Gov.
Mike Parson signed into law on Wednesday the bill that back funds the deployment of about 200 Missouri National Guard troops and 22 State Highway Patrol officers to the Texas-Mexico border. “I think the important takeaway for folks back home in Missouri is to realize the battle that we're fighting down here at the border is keeping it from happening in our own borders, in... State Rep. Peter Merideth, D-St. Louis, criticized the effort. “This is a campaign stunt for a lot of people about the national fight happening over the border,” Merideth said.
“What I think is frustrating is, while it’s just politics, it has real consequences.” The $2.2 million supplemental budget bill passed both legislative chambers in Jefferson City with broad bipartisan support earlier this spring — despite some Democrats' objection to Parson’s decision to send the troops and officers. Update: Missouri’s executive order sending Missouri National Guard troops to Texas expired on Thursday, June 13. Gov. Mike Parson did not extend the order. His office touted it as a “success” on June 13.
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson’s executive order to send Missouri National Guard members to the Texas border with Mexico expires Thursday, raising questions about whether the Republican governor will extend the deployment. Parson signed the order in February, sending up to 200 National Guard members and 22 State Highway Patrol troopers to aid Texas, which has promoted a plan dubbed “Operation Lone Star” that uses Texas... With the June 13 expiration date looming, Sen. Lincoln Hough, a Springfield Republican who chairs the Senate’s powerful budget-writing committee, sent a letter to Parson on Wednesday supporting an extension of the executive order. “If you decide to continue Missouri’s involvement, you have my full support in securing the border through Operation Lone Star,” Hough, who is running for lieutenant governor, wrote in the letter.
“Funding this order is crucial for safeguarding our border and protecting Missouri and its communities.” Gov. Opposition by senators in the hard-line Missouri Freedom Caucus threatens to derail the legislation for a second year in a row. Missouri Gov. After 35 years of ownership by the Turner family, one of Washington’s storied watering holes, the Sand Bar, is set to change hands. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said the state will send more National Guard troops to Texas to help secure the southern U.S. border. Meanwhile, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson says the 370-page, $118 billion bi-partisan plan to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza, and to secure the southern border won’t pass through the House.
The plan was released Sunday, the same day Parson joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott and 13 Republican counterparts for a security briefing in Eagle Pass, Texas. It’s an event Democrats call a political stunt to fan the flames of voter fear ahead of the fall elections.
