With the June 13 expiration date looming, Sen. Lincoln Hough, a Springfield Republican who chairs the Senate’s powerful budget-writing committee, sent a letter to Parson on Wednesday supporting an extension of the executive order. “If you decide to continue Missouri’s involvement, you have my full support in securing the border through Operation Lone Star,” Hough, who is running for lieutenant governor, wrote in the letter. “Funding this order is crucial for safeguarding our border and protecting Missouri and its communities.” ST.
LOUIS—After spending the day at the Texas-Mexico border with fellow Republican governors of more than a dozen states, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said Sunday night that he plans to send personnel and resources to work under a multibillion-dollar border security effort led by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott known as Operation Lone Star. Two Missouri National Guard units made up of a total of roughly 250 members, are currently working under a federal deployment to assist Border Patrol with law enforcement. “I think there’s no question whatsoever that the border has to be secured and I do believe at this point that the president and what’s going on in Washington, D.C. is not going to be able to help secure the border at this point,” Parson said in a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday night.

Meanwhile, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson says the 370-page, $118 billion bi-partisan plan to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza, and to secure the southern border won’t pass through the House.
The plan was released Sunday, the same day Parson joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott and 13 Republican counterparts for a security briefing in Eagle Pass, Texas. It’s an event Democrats call a political stunt to fan the flames of voter fear ahead of the fall elections. Border state officials, even some of the more conservative, like what they see in the national security package unveiled Sunday. Members of the Missouri National Guard will be deployed to Texas to help with the crises on the southern border. Gov. Mike Parson visited the U.S.-Mexico border over the weekend., where he stood with 24 other Republican governors to show support for Texas on its efforts to block illegal border crossings.
“We will start the process of working with Operation Lone Star to be able to put boots on the ground and be able to help even more than what we already have,” he said. “We currently have National Guard members in Texas, but we are going to do more.” Parson said a secure southern border leads to a stronger Missouri. “When you come down here and see this border firsthand, you would realize every day what everybody’s going through down here, law enforcement and what’s happening with dealing with the cartel, all the things... “I’m telling you, every state needs to step up and make sure we’re doing the right thing by enforcing the laws.” The move by the Republican governors follows the U.S.
Supreme Court siding last month with the Biden administration and ordering the removal of razor wire along the border. Texas installed the wire to block people from illegally entering the country. The governor says Missouri will put more boots on the ground to help Texas secure the southern border.
