The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington welcomes applications for both master’s and Ph.D. programs. The majority of graduate students are admitted annually, in autumn quarter, although a few online programs welcome new students on a quarterly basis. For graduate students admitted in autumn quarter, preference is given to applications for admission and financial support that are received by December 15, 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time. Applications received after the deadline are considered on a space available basis.
Applicants may check the status of their application by logging into their online application and checking the status page. Applications will not be reviewed unless they are complete. Applications for the program are submitted through the UW Graduate School’s online application. Please do not submit any materials directly to UW CEE as they will not be reviewed. In addition to minimum admission requirements for all prospective graduate students who are applying to UW, the UW Civil & Environmental Engineering Department has specific requirements for graduate specialty areas. To be considered for admission, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, its equivalent from a foreign institution or a Bologna bachelor’s degree with... Students typically have a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, however it is not required for all areas. Please see admissions prerequisites by area for more information. A 3.0 minimum GPA (based on 4.0 scale) from the last 60 graded semester hours or last 90 graded quarter hours in undergraduate or post-graduate academic coursework is required. In practice, substantially higher grades may be necessary for admission to the graduate program.
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting official TOEFL test scores. For more information and minimum score requirements, refer to the Graduate School’s English Language Proficiency Requirements. A score higher than the minimum may be needed in order to be competitive for admission. In addition to minimum admission requirements, the UW Civil & Environmental Engineering Department has specific requirements for master’s degree specialty areas. Civil and environmental engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, and management of facilities serving the needs of people. These activities focus on: transportation infrastructure and construction; heavy construction; hydrology and hydrodynamics; structures, mechanics, and geotechnical engineering; wastewater treatment, and water-quality management; solid- and hazardous-waste disposal; and air quality management.
A civil engineer may specialize in one or several of these activities and may further specialize in a particular function, such as design or management. The department is organized into six academic areas: construction engineering; transportation engineering; geotechnical engineering; structural engineering and mechanics; environmental engineering; and hydrology and hydrodynamics. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree provides students a broad-based educational experience, enabling them to address complex and multi-faceted civil engineering problems in construction, transportation, structural transportation, water, and environmental engineering. After completing the required 300-level core curriculum, students may explore the areas of their interest with greater focus in their senior year or explore a variety of topics at the 400-level. The deadline to submit a request for placement in an engineering major occurs annually on July 1.
If the number of Engineering Undeclared students requesting the major exceeds the department capacity for such students, a matching process is implemented. Factors considered include performance in prerequisite courses, quality of overall academic record, content of personal statement, applicable work or extracurricular activities, and other special circumstances as disclosed by the applicant.
